Ipswich Results Delight Owner-Breeders

3 minute read

Black type results on Ipswich Cup day delighted a wide range of owners and breeders.

Star Witness sired his 13th stakes winner when Sydney mare Magic Alibi stormed home to land the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich.

Magic Alibi (Star Witness x This Magic Moment by Magic Albert) raced in midfield and proved too strong at the finish for Foxy Housewife (Foxwedge) and Plucky Girl (Pluck).

The Gerald Ryan-trained five-year-old was previously stakes placed when she finished third in the G3 Sheraco Stakes in 2016.

Ryan set Magic Alibi for the Waterhouse Classic after she ran fourth to Invincibella in the $1 million Magic Millions Plate in January but her Sydney-based breeder and part-owner Artie Laing wasn’t on hand to celebrate.

However the win meant a lot to Laing who bred Magic Alibi with his brother Andrew and father Arthur. When the filly was passed in for $55,000 at the 2014 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale he decided to race her with friends.

The Waterhouse was Magic Alibi’s fifth win from 28 starts, which includes six placings and $355,560 in stakes.

Laing and his brother Andrew also raced the Commands mare Dorf Command, whose seven wins and $429,350 included the 2009 Waterhouse Classic.

“Dorf Command was trained by Clarry Conners and he came with us to have a look at a Magic Albert filly at the 2009 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale,” Laing said.

“We were really surprised that she only cost us $4000 and we named her This Magic Moment. She ended up winning a race for us but had a few leg issues and never reached her full potential.

“This Magic Moment was the first one we ever bred from and her first foal turned out to be Magic Alibi.”

This Magic Moment is one of two winners for her dam Bold Corinne (Distinctly North) who is a daughter of G1 Queensland Oaks winner Tristram Rose (Sir Tristram).

Tristram Rose also produced Angellen (Twig Moss) who was a stakes winner and placed in the 1998 Ipswich Cup during her racing career.

This is also the family of G1 winners Flamberge (Exceed And Excel) and Sunburnt Lad (Scenic).

This Magic Moment has been exclusively served by Star Witness since producing Magic Alibi in 2012.

Queensland sprinter I’m A Rippa became racing’s latest millionaire when he won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich.

The win by the four-year-old Love Conquers All gelding caps what has been a breakout season after he won the G3 BRC Sprint in May and the $1 million Magic Millions QTIS Handicap in January.

I’m A Rippa (Love Conquers All x Derippa by Seidnazar) was purchased by trainer Tony Gollan for $55,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling sale and has won seven races from 26 starts for $1,039,507.

He is the first foal and only winner for his dam Derippa, who was covered by Spirit Of Boom last spring after being picked up at the 2016 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $20,000.

A sister to I’m A Rippa was sold for $80,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale, purchased by Gollan Racing and John Foote Bloodstock.

Love Conquers All (Mossman) is also the sire of G2 winner Savanna Amour and is standing at Sun Stud in Queensland.

WA-bred stayer Tradesman provided his sire Trade Fair with a notable eastern states win in Saturday’s Listed Ipswich Cup.

The Darren Weir-trained six-year-old gelding began his career in WA where he won the Listed Belmont Guineas as a three-year-old.

He has been placed at G2 and G3 level and has now won nine races from 27 starts for prize money of $666,150.

Tradesman is the last foal from the metropolitan-winning dam Virelay (Laranto), who has had four winners from four foals to race and also produced Tradesman’s stakes-placed brother Trading Day.

Virelay comes from a successful WA family, her dam Glissanoa (Todvega) being a half-sister to the granddam of G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Road To Success (Dolphin Street).

Trade Fair (Zafonic) is the sire of 12 stakes winners and is standing at Lynwood Park Stud in Western Australia.

The Gerald Ryan-trained mare Magic Alibi broke through for her first stakes success in scoring here, her fifth win from 28 starts to date. She began well from her outside barrier (14), settled nicely in eighth place, tracking a solid pace, before fanning deep on turning for home. She then came with a strong late bid to grab victory by a neck at the post. The $31 chance Foxy Housewife raced in sixth place, made a wide move from the 600m, took a narrow lead at the 100m and then battled well for second in a sound effort, stepping up in class here. The favourite Plucky Girl, winner of her previous four starts, raced in third place on the rails, took the lead the 200m and then batted on for a sound third under her 58.5kg. Denmagic was back in tenth place and made good late ground for (1.9 lengths) fourth, just in advance of the well supported River Racer who had been handily placed (but deep) most of the way before fighting on well for fifth, beaten just under three lengths.
