Caulfield Group Quinella For Redwood

3 minute read

New Zealand-based sire Redwood continues to spiral up the sire rankings with a Group 3 quinella at Caulfield on September 22 another notable result for the son of High Chaparral.

Redwood’s talented pair Night’s Watch and Rising Red, both 5YO members of his oldest crop, fought out the finish of the G3 Foundation Cup (2000m), a race that gave the winner a berth in the $5 million Caulfield Cup.

Redwood stands at Westbury Stud in NZ and has served more than 120 mares each season.

“His progeny have needed time to show what they can do. He’s becoming a very good all round stallion,” said Westbury Stud’s general manager Russell Warwick.

Redwood himself was a G1 winner in the US as a 4YO and had 16 of his 17 starts in black type company.

The Darren Weir-trained Night’s Watch was initially raced solely by Westbury Stud owner Gerry Harvey and was trained in NZ before OTI Racing bought into the gelding. He was then transferred to the Darren Weir stable.

Night’s Watch (High Chaparral x Glory Run by Exceed And Excel) is the third stakes winner by Redwood.
