Group Winners Boost Segenhoe's Broodmare Band

3 minute read

Kevin Maloney’s Segenhoe Stud celebrated a notable Group double with two classy mares in Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday.

Gold Coast-trained Winter Bride won the G3 How Now Stakes at Caulfield while Melbourne m,are Miss Admiration travelled to Rosehill to win the G3 JRA Trophy and earn a start in the G1 ATC Metropolitan.

Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien said the black type double was a valuable boost for the farm’s broodmare depth.

“It’s very hard to go out and buy good mares. To keep improving the broodmare band the plan over the next few years is to make our own,” O’Brien said.

“At the moment we’ve got Winter Bride, Miss Admiration, Granny Red Shoes and Pretty In Pink as stakes winners going forward.”

The Toby Edmonds-trained Winter Bride (Not A Single Doubt x Amberino by Perugino) has now won seven of her 15 starts and $320,000 prizemoney. They include four of her last five starts and she becomes the 58th stakes winner for her Arrowfield-based sire.

The Segenhoe-bred Winter Bride is from the G2 winner Amberino (Perugino), who was sold by Segenhoe in 2016 for $150,000 at the Sydney Broodmare Sale.

Winter Bride is the third foal and best winner out of Amberino, whose 10 wins included the G2 Emancipation Stakes at Randwick.

Edmonds is enjoying a lot of success with other daughters of Not A Single Doubt From Within and Granny Red Shoes..

On Saturday at the Sunshine Coast From Within scored her third consecutive win by four lengths. Segenhoe’s 3YO filly Granny Red Shoes won a pair of Listed Races in Brisbane in June.

At Rosehill Segenhoe’s Melbourne-based mare Miss Admiration won the G3 JRA Trophy after trainer Mick Price elected to send the classy daughter of Sebring to Sydney.

Miss Admiration was G1 placed in the Australasian and Schweppes Oaks as a 3YO and is now set to back up in this weekend’s G1 ATC Metropolitan at Randwick.

Miss Admiration was a $210,000 buy for Yu Long Investments at the 2016 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where she was offered by Glastonbury Farms.

She is out of the Group performer Admiring (Street Cry) and is a half-sister to two winners. Admiring, a G2 placed Street Cry half-sister to the stakes-winner Empire Dancer.

Miss Admiration has now won twice earning nearly $290,000 prizemoney and is the 48th stakes-winner by Sebring.

Toby Edmonds-trained mare Winter Bride put up a smart first-up performance in winning here, her seventh win in 15 starts and her first at Group level. She was quickly away from her outside barrier (13) and was eased, after being caught deep, to settle in tenth place (wide with cover). She switched out on straightening, sprinted very well, hit the front at the 100m and went on to score, seemingly with something in hand by a half-length. Ellicazoom raced back in 12th place, went widest of all at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and fought very well for a good second. Platinum Angel raced in last place in the 13-horse field, went really wide from the 200m and then ran on gamely for a close up third in a good firstup run. I Am Excited settled in seventh place, between runners, got a split at the 200m and then fought on nicely for (1.6 lengths) fourth.
