Hinchinbrook juvenile Unite And Conquer set the bar high for spring two-year-olds in Melbourne when he led home a Magic Millions trifecta in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
An $80,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for Blueblood Thoroughbreds, Unite And Conquer was never headed to win easily from Sun City (Zoustar) and Grand Scholar (Wandjina).
The Maribyrnong Trial Stakes was the first two-year-old race held in Victoria this season and ensures Unite And Conquer will be favoured to win the G2 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on November 3.Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Unite And Conquer will then be set to head to Queensland for January’s $2 million Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).Unite And Conquer (Hinchinbrook x Maglissa by Magnus) provided the late Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) with his 16th individual stakes winner.
He is the only named foal from Maglissa, a three-time winning daughter of the G1 winner Danglissa (Danzero).• At Doomben the Rothesay colt Guntantes made a perfect start to his career in Brisbane’s first 2YO race of the season to add a new winner to the family of prolific producer Cantantes.
Cantantes, by Just Awesome, died in February but trainer Robert Heathcote believes Guntantes could be her best foal yet after he won in emphatic fashion by almost four lengths.Cantantes has already produced the Heathcote-trained stakes winners in Excellantes and Funtantes.
"We lost Cantantes in February after a long career at stud but she might have left us something special," Heathcote said. "Maybe he will be the best."We kept him and didn't put him through the sales so hopefully he can win a few more QTIS races.”
The first Brisbane 2YO fillies race was won by the Liam Birchley-trained Courseshewill, the Unencumbered filly who had won on debut at Toowoomba two weeks ago.Courseshewill is raced by a syndicate headed by Birchley's biggest client Mark McLean.
