Domesday Delights Aquis Farm On Derby Day

3 minute read

The worth of Queensland-based stallion Domesday soared on Saturday after his son Extra Brut won the historic Victoria Derby at Flemington.

Extra Brut (Domesday x Dom Perion by Redoute’s Choice) is the second classic winner by his sire and was the first Derby starter for his trainer Darren Weir.

He also becomes the fifth G1 winner sired by Domesday, a son of Red Ransom standing at Aquis Farm.

The colt was having his first start in the light blue and black of Aquis Farm after the stud bought into the colt only last week.

A $100,000 Classic Yearling Sale purchase by Spicer Thoroughbreds from the Grange Thoroughbreds draft, Extra Brut has won four of his six starts for prize money of $1,415,620.

He was initially sold for $52,000 to Gary Mudgway from the Stonehouse Thoroughbreds draft at the 2015 Great Southern Weanling Sale.

Bred by Andrew McDonald, Extra Brut was a pinhook success story for Mudgway as he onsold the colt to Spicer Thoroughbreds at the Classic Sale seven months later.

Domesday standing on a fee of only $9,900, is the sire of 18 stakes winners including his five G1 winners Extra Brut, Pressday, Daysee Doom, Doctor Doom and 2017 Queensland Derby winner Ruthven, now racing in Hong Kong.

He is also the sire Five To Midnight who won the Listed Fielding Gold Cup in New Zealand on Saturday.

Extra Brut is one of two winners for his dam Dom Perion, a winning daughter of the unraced mare Chamnpagnecharlotte (Rahy)/, herself a half-sister to G2 winners Esteemed Friend (Gulch) and Badouizm (Sheikh Albadou) and the Listed winner Red Monsoon (Miswaki).

Extra Brut’s older half-sister Fill The Flute (Statue Of Liberty) has won four of her eight starts.

The Darren Weir-trained colt Extra Brut staged an impressive staying performance in winning this Group 1 feature. He was eased and settled near the tail of the 16-horse field from his wide barrier (13). He was still well back before improving (wide) rounding the home turn, sprinted to take the lead at the 200m and then fought gamely for a very good win. Stars Of Carrum settled in 12th place on the rails, improved (between runners) at the home turn, got a split at the 200m, challenged shortly afterwards and then fought gamely for second. Chapada raced back in seventh place, improved (behind runners) at the home turn but only gained clear running over the latter stages before finishing on to take third, looking somewhat unlucky. Sikorsky raced back in seventh place, improved from the 600m, briefly got to the front at the 300m before holding on for (3.2 lengths) fourth. The favourite Thinkin' Big raced in sixth place (one off the rails) improved nicely coming to the home turn but just battled from that point for (7.4 lengths) 12th, appearing tested by the solidly run 2500m.
