Ekraar Dies; Bolt d'Oro To Spendthrift

Veteran sire Ekraar has died in New Zealand at the age of 25.

The son of Red Ransom began his New Zealand stallion career at Stony Bridge Stud before moving to Linwood Farm and finally relocating to Paradise Farm.

His noted progeny include the G1 winners Sheez Sensational, Ekstreme, Habibi and Rising Romance.

Ekraar won the G1 Fran Premier del Jockey Club and three G3 races.

He is currently represented by the New Zealand St Leger runner-up Felaar.

Bolt d’Oro, a multiple G1 winner by Medgalia D’Oro, has been retired and will take up stud duty in 2019 at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.

Bolt d’Oro began his career with three emphatic victories as a 2YO including back-to-back G1 wins in the Del Mar Futurity FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita by 7¾ lengths earned the fastest speed figures of the year by a 2YO.

As a 3YO Bolt d’Oro won the G2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita first-up and went on to be runner-up to eventual Triple Crown winner Justify in the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

He retires with earnings of $1,016,000 and enters stud as Medaglia d’Oro’s fastest ever G1-winning 2YO.

A $630,000 Saratoga Select yearling, Bolt d’Oro is out of the multiple stakes-producing A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot and hails from a deep Claiborne female family.
