First crop sire Brazen Beau has his first black type winner after the impressive colt Accession won the $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick for trainer Chris Waller and syndicators Star Thoroughbreds.

The win in the sale restricted Listed race will boost the profile of Brazen Beau when he returns to the UK for another shuttle season standing at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket in 2019.

Accession, having his second career start after a debut second at Rosehill, beat the Newcastle winner Strasbourg (I Am Invincible) by three quarters of a length, with Victorian-trained Namimo (Choisir) third.

Brazen Beau, who stands at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria, is also the sire of the exciting Godolphin bred and owned Tassort, a high rating winner of his only start at Rosehill last month, and the stakes placed First Dawn from only his first eight runners.

Star Thoroughbreds principal Denise Martin paid $300,000 for Accession (Brazen Beau x Ready As Elle by More Than Ready) as a yearling out of the 2018 Australian Easter Yearling Sale on the advice of former Godolphin executive Henry Plumptre.

Martin said she was determined to secure a yearling by Brazen Beau and took Plumptre’s recommendation for the Ready As Elle colt after failing to find the horse she wanted at other sales.

“Henry assisted Star at the sales before he took up his new appointment with Cambridge Stud in New Zealand. Coming into Easter we hadn’t been able to find the right one at any of the other sales,’’ Martin said.

“This colt was very athletic, had a lot of purpose and his attitude was marvellous.”

Widden Stud offered the colt and retained a share in him after the sale.

Waller was the obvious choice to train Accession as he took Brazen Beau to G1 wins in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Newmarket Handicap before he was narrowly beaten at Royal Ascot at the end of his racing career.

Waller seems certain to set Accession for the $2 million Inglis Millennium at Warwick Farm on February 9 as a win in that race will leave him only a win away from a $3 million bonus if he can then take out the ATC Sires Produce Stakes at Randwick in April.

“We’re well aware there’s a $2 million race in February and we are now alive for the extra $3 million as well so there are some big decisions to make moving forward,’’ Martin said.

Accession has now earned $314,000 prize-money from his two starts.

He is the first winner from two to race from Ready As Elle, a five-time winner and half-sister to champion Singapore sprinter Emperor Max (Holy Roman Emperor).

Ready As Elle has a yearling colt by Zoustar and a filly foal by Star Witness.
