Classy Debut By Dawn Approach Colt

3 minute read

A new 2YO star emerged at Randwick on Saturday when the Dawn Approach youngster Dawn Passage made an impressive winning debut for the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott stable.

Dawn Passage set a new class record for the 1000m after winning two lead-up barrier trials, sprinting strongly from midfield to score by almost four lengths.

Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach x Raja Lane by Devaraja) was a $150,000 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale purchase by his trainers and Blue Sky Bloodstock.

He is a half-brother to the stakes winner Dinkum Diamond (Keep The Faith), the dam of this season classy Group winner Graff (Star Witness).

Waterhouse said his next race will be the inaugural $2 million Warwick Farm Millennium on February 9.

“What an exciting colt. He’s now eligible for the race worth two million dollars,” Waterhouse said.

Mill Park Stud sold Dawn Passage at the Melbourne sale.

“He was a well put together, well conformed colt,” said Mill Park’s Chris Watson.

“His main attribute was always his temperament, he was easy to do everything with.

“He sold up to his looks and probably beyond our expectation.”

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Dawn Passage staged a very smart performance in winning here on debut. He settled back in 11th place for Blake Shinn, tracking a hot early tempo before getting between runners at the 300m. He then sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 100m and then drew away to score easily by just over three lengths and in fast time (56.55). Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Aussie had a nice trip in sixth place on the rails, just behind the leaders, from his good barrier (5), got a split on straightening, took the lead at the 300m and then kept battling on well for second in a good debut effort. Godolphin-raced colt Bivouac raced in eighth place (wide with cover), switched into clear running on straightening, challenged at the 200m and kept fighting on well for third. The favourite Espaaniyah, a stablemate of the winner, worked from her inside barrier (1) to share the lead on the rails, momentarily got clear on turning for home but weakened from the 200m to finish (7.3 lengths) eighth with her early efforts taking its toll.
