Arrowfield Stud’s exciting young sire Dundeel has his first Group One winner with a classic success in South Africa by his Australian-bred son Atyaab.
The notable breakthrough came when his first crop product Atyaab (Dundeel x Sylvaner by Danasinga) won the G1 Cape Derby at Kenilworth on Saturday for trainer Mike De Kock.
Bred by Arrowfield Stud and John Leaver, the colt was purchased by Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Stud from the Arrowfield draft for $260,000 at 2017 Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.Dundeel, by High Chaparral, was a six-time G1 winner including the ATC Australian Derby and has the potential to become an influential classic sire.
Atyaaan has now won three of his seven career starts. His dam Sylvaner, now 21, won three G2 races and has produced four other winners, including stakes winner Vesper (Zabeel).
Sylvaner is out of the G3 winner Isla Bijou (Noble Bijou) and is a half sister to G1 winner Centisle (Centaine) and Ungaro (Centaine), the dam of G3 winner Somepin Anypin (Pins) and stakeswinning pair Rule Of Engagement (Danasinga) and Salsa (O’Reilly).Sylvaner has a 2YO filly by Dundeel, foaled a brother to Atyaab in 2018 and was covered by Dundeel again last year.
Aytaab is Dundeel’s fourth stakeswinner and the fourth G1 winner to emerge from Arrowfield’s 2017 crop after The Autumn Sun, Estijaab and Maid Of Heaven.Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan, said he was delighted to see Aytaab land the Derby.
“He is a bonny little horse with a great attitude. Given his pedigree we always expected him to thrive over the longer trips and he has really shown that with this win,” Gold told ANZ Bloodstock.“The Dundeels as expected are starting to really come good as three-year-olds which is exciting to see.”
Atyaab is the fifth G1 winner found by Gold in Arrowfield’s Easter consignments, joining Mustaaqeem (2016), Rafeef (2014), Majmu (2013) and Reaan (2007).Shadwell is enjoying great success in South Africa this year with Australian 3YOs, having won the G1 Cape Guineas with their homebred Epaulette 3YO Soqrat. Soqrat then ran second in the G1 Queen's Plate on January 5.
Dundeel enjoyed a big weekend after Cutadeel (Dundeel x Dineeta by Dylan Thomas) showed why he’s the current New Zealand Derby favourite with a classy defeat of older horses over 1600 metres at Pukekohe in NZ on Friday. On Saturday at Newcastle the Paul Perry-trained 2YO colt Pandano (Dundeel x Milanesa by Snitzel) won by 3.8 lengths, joining Yourdeel and Castelvecchio to give Dundeel a perfect trio of debut winners from his first three second-crop runners.
Yourdeel (Dundeel x Miss Zapper by Red Ransom) continued his good work on Saturday at Ellerslie with a dead-heat third in the $1 million Karaka Million 2YO Classic.Star Thoroughbreds’ 3YO colt Dealmaker (Dundeel x Sport Chic by Redoute’s Choice) was an unlucky second over 1400m at Randwick on Saturday.
