Imports Impress At Flemington

3 minute read

The G2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington on Saturday was dominated by the Lindsay Park team with the recent addition Fifty Stars leading home a stable trifecta.

The former Darren Weir stable member Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars x Swizzle Stick by Sadler's Wells) led home the trifecta, beating stablemates So Si Bon (So You Think) and Cool Chap (High Chaparral), a trio representing an intertwine of international breeding

The imported Fifty Stars is out of a mare by the great Sadler's Wells, sire of High Chaparral who in turn is the sire of So You Think.

Fifty Stars was sold as a yearling in the UK for £110,000 at the Tattersalls October Sale (Book 2).

His unraced dam Swizzle Stick is a half-sister to Irish champion Viztoria (Oratorio) from the family of Zilzal (Nureyev).

Swizzle Stick is the dam of two winners from two to race and has an unnamed Lawman filly and a 2YO colt by Slade Power.

Another imported winner at Flemington was the impressive German-bred stayer Schabau (Pastorius x Staying Alive by Royal Dragon) in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality.

A €30,000 purchase from the 2016 BBG September Yearling Sales, Schabau is the second foal from the stakes placed mare Staying Alive, a daughter of the Listed winner Schwarzmeer (Kings Lake).

Schwarzneer is a half-sister to the G2 winner Selkis (Monsun) and is one of five stakes horses from Sankt Johanna (High Game).

The 4YO entire Schabau is unbeaten in Australia and is the first stakes winner by is German sire Pastorius, a son of Soldier Hollow who relocated to Haras De La Hetraie in France last year.

Talented four-year-old Fifty Stars, who has having his third run this preparation, recorded his seventh win and his second stakes victory in 11 starts in scoring here. He settled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up strongly on straightening, hit the front on passing the 300m and fought back gamey to win in a photo. So Si Bon settled back in second-last place in the 14-horse field from a wide barrier, improved between runners on turning for home, got a split at the 300m and finished well for a late-closing second. Cool Chap was ninth on the rails, got a split at the 300m and battled on nicely for third. Johannes Vermeer settled in last place from his outside barrier, went deep on turning for home and then finished strongly for an eyecatching (2.3 lengths) fourth on his first run since finishing second in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November.
