Godolphin In Strong Position For Golden Slipper

3 minute read

Godolphin is poised to be represented by at least five top shelf two-year-olds in next week’s Golden Slipper Stakes after another weekend of standout results for the leading juvenile stabl

Godolphin owned and bred youngsters won the G2 Reisling Stakes at Randwick, G3 Black Opal Stakes in Canberra and the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington to add more wins to what is becoming an exceptional season for juveniles racing in Sheikh Mohammed’s famous blue silks.

Godolphin juveniles trained by James Cummings have won 18 races this season including seven Group and Listed Races while Anthony Freedman has produced the unbeaten Lyre for three wins including the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.

Lyre, the only 2YO starter Freedman has produced for Sheikh Mohamed this season, is set to start in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday week along with at least four youngsters trained by Cummings.

After Saturday’s racing Cummings has Microphone, Tenley, Pin Sec and Exhilarates among the top 16 qualifiers on the latest Golden Slipper order of entry with Bivouac, Amercement and Kiamichi all within the top 26.

Cummings had a setback when his top colt Tassort was ruled out after a setback but the weekend results only strengthened his position with the wins by Tenley (Reisling Stakes) and Pin Sec (Black Opal) securing them certain places in the Slipper field.

The VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner La Tene would also be assured of a Slipper start with almost $160,000 prizemoney but was not among the Godolphin entries for the world’s richest 2YO race.

TENLEY (Medgalia D’Oro x Fratianne by Lonhro) is unbeaten in three starts and exempt from the Golden Slipper ballot following her impressive win in the Reisling Stakes at Randwick where she beat stablemate and Magic Millions Classic winner Exhilarates (Snitzel).

Tenley is the 124th stakes winner by her sire Medaglia d’Oro. It would be ironic if a youngster by Medaglia d’Oro won the Golden Slipper now that he has finished his long shuttle career for Darley in Australia.

Medaglia d’Oro began shuttling to Australia in 2010 and served his last season in the Hunter Valley in 2017.

He made a huge impact, siring Golden Slipper winner Vancouver and Golden Rose winner Astern, both now at stud. Overall he is the sire of 21 individual G1 winners worldwide, the majority sired in Kentucky where he now resides permanently.

Tenley is the third foal from the winning Lonhro mare Fratianne, a member of a high class family that includes Vancouver (Medaglia D'Oro), Bradbury's Luck (Redoute's Choice) and Murtajill (Rock Of Gibraltor).

Fratianne has a yearling filly by Shooting to Win, a weanling filly by Sebring and is in foal to Zoustar.

PIN SEC (Lonhro x Moderate by Commands) became the 82nd winner for her sire when she proved a class above her rivals in Sunday’s Black Opal Stakes in Canberra, scoring by four lengths to remain unbeaten after two starts.

Lonhro is also the sire of Blue Diamond winner Lyre and has made his mark on the Golden Slipper as the sire of the 20xx winner PIerro

Pin Sec is a sister to the two-time winner Restrained from the stakeswinning mare Moderate, who won four races.

Moderate is a daughter of the stakes-placed Gradual (Strategic), also the dam of the winners Steep, Cascade and Languid. Pin Sec’s fourth dam Rass Dancer (Rassenyll) was a multiple stakes winning 2-year-old.

Moderate has a weanling filly by Street Boss.

LA TENE (Helmet x Celts by Lonhro) became the ninth stakes winner for former shuttle sire Helmet with her seond career win in the G2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes.

A multiple G1 winner by Exceed And Excel, Helmet stood for six seasons in Australia and is now at stud in Germany after serving three northern hemisphere seasons in the UK. Exceed and Excel is also the sire of Godolphin’s impressive colt Microphone, winer of last week’s G2 Skyline Stakes at Randwick.

Helmet’s progeny include last year’s Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow.

La Tene is the fourth foal from the G3 winner Celts and her first stakes winner. The family includes stakes winners Appoint and Show County.

Celts has a weanling filly by Teofilo and is in foal to Street Boss.

Coolmore stallion Rubick has shot to third place on the first season sires prizemoney table after his impressive colt Yes Yes Yes won the G2 Todman Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

A recent addition to the Chris Waller stable from Darren Weir, Yes Yes Yes (Rubick x Sin Sin Sin by Fantastic Light) emulated his sire, a son of Encosta De Lago who also won the G2 Todman Stakes as a 2YO.

Bred by Arlington Park Racing, Yes Yes Yes is the fourth 2YO winner by Rubick.

A $200,000 yearling purchase by Darren Weir Racing and John Foote Bloodstock at the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Yes Yes Yes won two of his three starts for his former trainer in Victoria.

The colt is the sixth foal and first stakes winner among three winners from three time winning mare Sin Sin Sin. They include the stakes performer Dee Nine Elle (Duporth) who was sold for $180,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

A Wellington Boot winner, Sin Sin Sin is a half-sister to stakes winners Hot As Hell (County), Flaming Hot (County), Craig's Dragon (Catbird) and Hell It’s Hot (Zeditave), the latter being the dam of G1 winner In Her Time (Time Thief).

Sin Sin Sin has a yearling colt by Press Statement, a weanling colt by Sebring and is in foal to Not A Single Doubt.

Godolphin-raced filly Tenley is now unbeaten in three starts and she staked her claims for the upcoming Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) with a really smart effort in winning here. She settled well for James McDonald back in seventh place, behind a fast tempo, switched deeper on turning for home, sprinted quickly, hit the front at the 100m and drew clear to score decisively. Stablemate Exhilarates, having her first run since winning the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 12, settled in third place on the rails, challenged at the 200m and then battled on well for second. Queenslandtrained filly Vincere Volare raced outside the leader (Belitsa), got to the front at the 300m and then held on well for third, just in front of Anaheed who had raced fifth place (one off the rails) to the home turn before fighting on for (2.2 lengths) fifth after being in a challenging position at the 200m.
