Classic Targets For 3YO Group Winners

3 minute read

Exciting Dundeel 3YO Global Exchange enhanced his classic claims with his second consecutive Group 2 win in the $200,000 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Bought for $NZ130,000 at the 2017 NZB Karaka Premier Sale, Global Exchange won three of his first five starts including the G2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield on February 23.

On Friday night he took that record to four out of six, swooping four wide around the home turn and fighting off another Karaka graduate, the $NZ135,000 Premier Sale purchase Declarationofheart (Declaration of War) to win by a short half-head.

"He's got a lovely temperament, he relaxes well and has got a good turn of foot to go with it,” jockey Ben Melham said.

“I had to make a longer run than I wanted but he just got stronger and stronger - he’s a good colt.”

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Global Exchange (Dundeelo x Incredulous by Keep The Faith) has now won four times and has earned $273,550 in prizemoney – more than double his purchase price.

Global Exchange was bred by the China Horse Club and was offered at Karaka by Little Avondale Stud where he was purchased by Ciaron Maher Racing.

The colt is out of the winning mare Incredulous, a half-sister to the G2 winner Faith Hill (Danehill).

Faith Hill is the dam of Black Minx (Lonhro), dam of Listed winner So Si Bon (So You Think).

Global Exchange will now head to Sydney for the G1 ATC Australian Derby at Randwick on April 6.

Runner-up Declarationofheart has had eight starts for two wins and three placings, earning $115,150 in stakes.

Classy Godolphin filly Pohutukawa took her earnings to almost $300,000 when she won Friday’s G3 Kembla Grange Classic.

Pohutukawa ( Medaglia D’Oro x Lumina by Redoute’s Choice) has won four of her eight starts for prizemoney of $296,125.

She is the first foal to race out of the winning mare Lumina, a sister to stakes winner Chiaramonte and half-sister to Chinchilla Rose (Lion Hunter), Ferocity (Lion Hunter) and Leona Chiara (Lion Hunter).

Leona Chiara is the dam of Star Witness (Starcraft) and Nostradamus (Medaglia D’Oro).

Lumina was sold by Godolphin in foal to Teofilo (Galileo) at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale to Lacoste Bloodstock for $180,000.

Pohutukawa’s former shuttle sire Medaglia D’Oro has 124 stakes winners worldwide including 22 bred in the southern hemisphere.

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained colt Global Exchange is building an imposing record, now being the winner of four of six starts, his last two at Group 2 level. He settled in third last place in the 12-horse field from his outside barrier, improved (deep) from the 600m and kept running on strongly to grab a last stride victory in an impressive effort. Declarationofheart raced in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up (wide) from the 600m, challenged (wide out) at the home turn and kept fighting gamely for a close second. Godolphin's Cossetot raced in fifth place, one off the rails, improved well to take the lead entering the straight and battled very well for a close up third. Stars Of Carrum raced in second last place, improved (between runners) coming to the home turn, switched out on straightening and ran on well for fourth in a promising effort, advancing in distance here.
