Brutal Bashes His Doncaster Rivals

3 minute read

O’Reilly’s Karaka graduate Brutal produced a brilliant performance to beat a stellar field of older horses in the A$3 million Doncaster Mile at Randwick on Saturday, sparking widespread celebrations in New Zealand.

His win continued a proud recent record for Karaka graduates in the Doncaster with Sacred Falls, also by the late O’Reilly, winning twice in 2013 and 2014 and Kermadec (Teofilo) in 2015.

Both those horses now stand at stud and Brutal (O’Reilly x Alberton Princess by Golan) is destined to join them after becoming the 14th G1 winner sired by Waikato Stud’s deceased champion stallion O’Reilly who died in 2015.

Brutal, who brought the Winx form to the Doncaster after a last start second behind the champion mare, was a $220,000 NZB Karaka Premier Sale purchase by Hawkes Racing in 2017 when offered by Mapperley Stud on behalf of his breeders Ruth Kerr-Taylor and Ann Storey.

His stakes placed dam Alberton Princess, by Golan from the Straussbrook mare Straussbridge, is a three-quarter-sister to G3 winner Lady Alberton and a half-sister to G2 winner Te Akau Rose (Thorn Park).

Brutal is the best of four winners from four to race for Alberton Princess including the stakes-winner Talaria.

Brutal races in the colors made famous by the great sprinter Chautauqua, his syndicate headed by Legh Racing who raced the former Hawkes-trained star.

“He’s a super colt, he’s an absolute star,” said co-trainer Michael Hawkes.

“There’s just so many people to thank. These owners have been fantastic as they’ve let us do what we wanted to do.

“We always knew we had the right horse with only 49 kilograms and after he ran second to Winx we were confident this was the right race for him.”

Singapore-based Glen Boss was having his first ride on the 3YO and has now won the Doncaster a record seven times.

The Doncaster was the fourth win of Brutal’s seven start career and lifted his prize-money earnings to $2.150 million, more than 10 times his purchase price.

He other wins include the Listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes and Listed Antler Luggage Plate and placings in the G1 George Ryder Stakes and G3 Southern Cross Stakes.

A yearling half-brother to Brutal by Ocean Park was offered at Karaka earlier this year, failing to meet his $30,000 reserve.

Alberton Princess also has a 2YO colt by Sacred Falls and was served by Iffraaj in 2018.

Team Hawkes-trained colt Brutal followed his excellent second to Winx (Street Cry) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) on March 23 with an impressive effort in taking out this Group 1 feature, his fourth win in seven starts. He was smartly away from his wide barrier (18) and soon settled outside the leader (Dreamforce), who was setting a solid tempo. He then fought gamely in the straight, got the upper hand under his 49kg at the 100m and went on to win well. Dreamforce went to the front and set a good pace (first 1000m in 60.47). He got a break at the 300m and then battled very gamey for second, conceding 4.5kg to the winner. The top weight (58kg) Hartnell began well and was handily placed in fourth spot. He moved up at the home turn and then kept fighting well for third. The Japanese runner Kluger raced in eighth place, between runners, and did well in running on for (2.7 lengths) fourth at his first Australian start. Shillelagh battled on nicely on the rails for (3.5 lengths) fifth while Dixie Blossoms made good late ground from back in the field for (3.6 lengths) sixth.
