Record Season For Not A Single Doubt

3 minute read

Star mare Kenedna pushed her sire Not A Single Doubt past $10 million Australian prizemoney for the fourth consecutive season with her resounding win in Saturday’s $700,000 Doomben Cup.

Kenedna recorded her second Group 1 victory from her last three starts and gave Not A Single Doubt a second G1 win in a week after his 3YO filly Qafila won the South Australian Derby at Morphettville on May 11.

Kenedna, winner of the G1 Coolmore Legacy Queen Of The Turf at Randwick in April, is now the winner of nine of her 26 starts and $1.881 million. She is the third dual G1 winner by her sire, joining Miracles Of Life and Extreme Choice.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, she was purchased for $80,000 by John Foote, Mike Rennie’s MDR Bloodstock and her former trainer Darren Weir from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2015 Melbourne Premier Sale.

Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt x Miss Dodwell by Falbrav) is a three-quarter sister to multiple Group winner and sire Spill The Beans (Snitzel) and half-sister to four other winners.

Their dam Miss Dodwell is a half-sister to the G3 winner Yammer (Bellotto) and Listed winner Blab (Flying Spur), the dam of G1 winner Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor) and related to notable G1 winners Bounding Away and Glastonbury.

Miss Dodwell produced a brother to Kenedna last year and was covered by Snitzel in 2018.

Not A Single Doubt is challenging for fourth place on the Australian General Sires’ premiership with progeny earnings of $10.2 million. He is the sire 13 stakes winners of 20 stakes races in 2018-19.

Maher and Eustace inherited Kenedna from the now disqualified Darren Weir earlier this year. Weir won seven races with the mare before his disqualification.

Maher said the ownership group had considered retiring Kenedna to become a broodmare and was grateful they chose to extend her racing career.

“This is a great group of owners, they’ve been supporters of mine for a long time now,’’ Maher said. “She came to me in great order from Darren Weir and a lot of his team have had a lot to do with her, who now work for my team.

“Credit to Darren who encouraged the owners not to send her to the breeding barn.

“They have got a multiple Group 1-winning mare now and she’s very valuable.’’

Maher and Eustace ended the day on a high when his Shamus Award filly Etana won the G2 Doomben Roses in a fine trial for the coming Queensland Oaks.

Maher co-signed for Etana (Shamus Award x Pink Siris by Encosta de Lago) with agent Dermot Farrington at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $400,000. She has now won four of her nine starts for prizemoney of $185,150.

She is a half-sister to the G3 performer Echo Gal (Stratum) while their winning dam Pink Siris, a Listed placegetter, is a sister to champion Hong Kong stayer Liberator from the European stakes winner Miss Helga (Alzao).

Shamus Award, a son of Snitzel, is to stand his first season at Rosemont Stud in Victoria this year after serving five seasons at Widden Stud in NSW.

Etana is his second stakes winner joining his Adelaide Guineas winner Classic Weiwei.

Talented mare Kenedna took her record to nine wins (seven placings) from 26 starts in recording her second victory at the elite level here. She was given a good trip by John Allen in eighth place, angled for a split on straightening, got along the inner to take the lead coming to the 100m and then fought back for a very good win. It was also a very good ride by Allen. Life Less Ordinary raced in last place in the 16-horse field, improved between runners coming to the home turn, got a split at the 200m and then ran on really well for second. Sixties Groove settled near the tail of the field, improved (deep) at the home turn and then ran on well to take the minor placing. Gem Song had a good trip, tracking the free-running leader (Archedemus) and kept fighting on for (1.4 lengths) fourth. Luvaluva was back in 12th place, made a wide move approaching the home turn and then fought on for fifth, beaten just under a length, in a sound effort, while Shillelagh settled in 11th place and made late ground for (2.1 lengths) sixth without ever looking like winning.
