Fast Rise By Prince Fawaz

Fastnet Rock’s newest star Prince Fawaz emerged as a leading spring classic contender with a brilliant win in the G1 JJ Atkins Plate at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Anthony Cummings-trained 2YO delivered Coolmore’s champion sire Fastnet Rock his 37th G1 winner with his second win in just five starts.

The progressive juvenile is also Fastnet Rock’s 147th individual stakes winner.

Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock x Lady Paget by Testa Rossa) was a $220,000 purchase by Anthony Cummings at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from Baramul Stud.

Cummings had good reason to be attracted to the yearling colt as due to his close connection to Casino Prince, the prominent sire son of Flying Spur he trained to G1 success in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

He also trained Prince Fawaz’s dam, the two-time winner Lady Paget, a daughter of the grand producer Lady Capel (Last Tycoon) and half-sister to four stakes winners including Casino Prince.

Lady Capel is also the dam of the G3 winner Tagus (Encosta de Lago) and dual Listed winners Lord Of The Land (Timber Country) and Metallurgical (Redoute’s Choice).

Lady Paget has weanling colt by Swiss Ace and is in foal to Reliable Man.

Prince Fawaz has now earned $457,950 from his five starts for a syndicate put together by Anthony and Edward Cummings and comprising mainly first-time owners.

Anthony Cummings has now won the JJ Atkins twice, landing the race 15 years ago with Outback Prince.

Anthony Cummings-trained colt Prince Fawaz has advanced quickly in class, following his impressive late-closing win in a two-year-old handicap (1400m) at Randwick on May 25 to taking out this Group 1 juvenile feature at his fifth start. He travelled well in ninth place, between runners, behind a good tempo (first 1000m in 59.75). Kerrin McEvoy steered him through a gap at the 200m, he hit the front on passing the 100m and then fought gamely to score narrowly but in good style, running the 1600m out well. The Chris Waller-trained colt Kubrick staged a really smart effort here at his third race start after wins at Cranbourne and Rosehill last month at his first two starts. He settled in eighth place, but deep. He moved up well at the 300m, took the lead on passing the 200m and then dug deep for (head) second. His stablemate Reloaded settled back in 12th place, tracked up (wide) rounding the home turn and ran on resolutely to take third. Shadow Hero raced in second last place in the 15-horse field, got between runners on turning for home and then kept running on solidly for (2.6 lengths) fourth in a good effort here at only his third start while Eric The Eel also made good ground for (2.8 lengths) fifth
