Day In The Sun For Cox Plate Winners

3 minute read

The Stradbroke meeting at Eagle Farm on Saturday proved to be a day in the sun for Cox Plate-winning sires Shamus Award and Ocean Park.

Both young stallions sired notable Group winners to give their stud careers a significant boost.

The classic win by the Shamus Award 3YO gelding Mr Quickie in the $600,000 Queensland Derby provided the second season sire with his first G1 winner and third stakes winner overall

Mr Quickie (Shamus Award x Special Favour by General Nediym) survived a protest from the connections of runner-up Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War) to make up for his unlucky third at his previous start in the G1 South Australian Derby in Adelaide.

After serving his first five seasons at Widden Stud in NSW, Shamus Award was transferred to Victoria’s Rosemont Stud in April where he will stand for an unchanged fee of $11,000 this spring.

The Derby win capped a big campaign by Mr Quickie as he has won four of his last six starts in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.

With nine wins and three placings from just 13 starts, Mr Quickie earnings are now just shy of $1 million.

Bred by Rosemont Stud, Mr Quickie was sold for $115,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to the syndicator Wylie Dalziel and his bloodstock adviser, the former champion trainer Peter Moody.

Moody was so taken with the youngster that he kept a share while Rosemont Stud also bought back into the youngster.

Mr Quickie has now won nine races from 13 starts along with three placings for prize-money of $939,700.

The Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie is the first winner from the General Nediym mare Special Favour, a daughter of the triple G2 winner and G1-placed My Tusker (Volksraad).

Special Favour was purchased for $30,000 by Rosemont Stud and Blue Sky Bloodstock at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale,

Her dam My Tusker is a half-sister to the G2 placed Platinum Passion (Redoute’s Choice), dam of the Listed winner Tribal Wisdom (Makfi).

Special Favour’s third dam is the five-time G1 winner Horlicks (Three Legs), dam of the 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew (Sir Tristram).

Special Favour has a 2YO filly by Zoustar who cost McEvoy Mitchell Racing $340,000 at the 2018 Sydney Classic Sale and yearling colt by Nostradamus. He was sold for $NZ125,000 to mark Pilkington at Karaka this year.

She was served by Sacred Falls last spring.

The Queensland winter carnival has been a rewarding one for Shamus Award as he is also the sire the G2 Doomben Roses winner Etana.

Mr Quickie is the first Brisbane carnival winner trained by Phillip Stokes, now based at Pakenham in Victoria.

"I think the sky's the limit for this horse. He's come a long way in a short space of time and who knows what he can measure up to next prep,” Stokes said.

"I'll leave him here for a month and then aim him at the spring in Melbourne.”

Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie followed up on his unlucky third in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on May 11 to take out this Group 1 three-year-old feature in good style, his ninth win from 13 starts. He settled in tenth place, was shuffled back a bit at the 800m before John Allen improved his position (between runners) at the 600m. He got a split at the 300m, hit the front at the 200m and then fought strongly to win well. Vow And Declare raced in seventh place, improved well from the 700m, challenged nearing the 100m and then fought well for second. Aliferous settled near last in the 18-horse field. She went deep rounding the home turn and then kept running on well for third, staging a solid effort. Nobu also settled well back. He was 16th in the mid-stages, tracked up deep (with cover) from the 600m, put in a run to be in a challenging position at the 200m and then battled on well for (2.7 lengths) fourth. Carif raced in sixth place, made a quick (wide) move approaching the home turn, hit the front on straightening and then battled on quite well for fifth, beaten four lengths.
