Alizee Rises In The Godolphin Ranks

3 minute read

Outstanding Sepoy mare Alizee has risen to an esteemed place among the many stars to race around the world in the famous Godolphin colours.

Alizee earned many plaudits with her eighth black type win in Saturday's G2 Missile Stakes at Rosehill in her first start as a 5YO.

The win took Alizee (Sepoy x Essaouira by Exceed And Excel) to equal second on Godolphin's all-time list of most black type wins behind only the recently-retired champion UK sprinter Blue Point, who won nine Group and Listed races.

Alizee's haul includes three G1 wins races among her nine career wins in 21 starts with her earnings now standing at more than $2.38 million

Her dam Essaouira is an elite mare, having produced five winners from her only five to race including the G1 winner and sire Astern (Medaglia D'Oro) and the high class stakes placed colt Tassort (Brazen Beau).

A Darley homebred, Alizee is also a half-sister to stakes-placed Mogador (Lonhro) and the three-time winner Marrakesh (Lonhro).

Alizee's second dam is the G2 winner Alizes (Rory's Jester), a daughter of the G1 winner La Baraka (Euclase).

Her fourth dam is multiple G1 winner Triscay (Marscay).

Essaouira has a two-year-old filly and a yearling colt both by Medaglia D'Oro and is in foal to Sepoy.

Sepoy, who is standing this spring at Northwood Park in Victoria, had a double on Saturday's Rosehill program when his promising 3YO Subedar made it two wins from two starts.

Also a Godolphin homebred, Subedar is from the dual G1 winner Virage De Fortune, a daughter of Anabaa who made a then-record Australian sale record of $3.4 million when she was purchased by Darley Australia at the 2007 Sydney Easter Broodmare Sale.

Virage De Fortune, a granddaughter of champion mare Emancipation (Bletchingly), is the dam of three other winners.

Three-time Group 1-winning mare Alizee staged a good firstup effort in winning here. She was ridden quietly by Hugh Bowman and settled in last place in the five-horse field, going a bit keenly behind a very steady early tempo before improving (deep) from the 600m. She made a quick move to take the lead on turning for home and then held on over the closing stages to score by a neck, with something in hand. Invincible Gem raced in fourth place, went to second at the 200m and ran on really well over the latter stages for a very good first-up second. Le Romain was third early on, was shuffled back in the small field to be last (out deep) at the home turn. He then steadily made ground in the sprint home to take third in a sound first-up run. The $101 outsider Dissolute was ridden hard to the early stages to find the lead. He then steadied the pace, was overtaken at the home turn and then held on quite well for (4.9 lengths) fourth with Vegadaze (6.5 lengths) last after racing a bit keenly outside of the leader to the home turn at his first run back.
