Godolphin Youngsters Carry On At Caulfield

3 minute read

Godolphin reached new heights with their juveniles in Australia last season and that crop seems certain to carry on in 2019/20 after two of their young stars landed a black type double at Caulfield last Saturday.

Last season the Godolphin runners won 68 stakes races including 16 black type wins by their 2YO team.

Godolphin's dominance of the 2YO races snared much of the headlines with victories in the Golden Slipper (Kiamichi), Blue Diamond (Lyre) and ATC Sires' Produce (Microphone) and Saturday's results indicate they will go on with it as 3YOs.

The Godolphin stable claimed the G3 Vain Stakes with last season's dual stakes winner Bivouac while Magic Millions 2YO Classic win Exhiulrates resujmed with a brilliant win in the G3 Quezette Stakes leaving other classy Godolphin fillies Pin Sex, the Black Opal winner, and Blue Diamond winner Lyre in her wake.

Exceed And Excel colt Bivouac is a valuable stud prospect, being a full brother to G2 placed Coruscate from the multiple winning More Than Ready mare Dazzler, a half sister to Exceed And Excel's 4-time G1 winner Guelph and G2 winner and sire Ghibellines.

Guelph is the dam of G2 winning sprinter Encryption – now at stud in Queensland - while Bivouac's granddam Camarilla is a G1 winning daughter of the Queensland Derby winner Camarena from the family of Golden Slipper winner and sire Canny Lad.

Bivouac's dam Dazzler has a yearling filly by Medaglia d'Oro and is in foal to Lonhro. She is due to go back to Exceed And Excel this spring.

Godolphin breeds between 100 to 150 foals annually in Australia but Exhilarates was a sale ring purchase for $600,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast after Sheikh Mohammed's team made the decision to play a more active role at yearling sales.

In 2018 Godolphin purchased some 20 yearlings with Snitzel filly Exhilarates the most successful of the buys to date with three wins and three placings from eight starts for $1,466,900 in stakes.

Godolphin was again a major player at the 2019 yearling sales, purchasing a Medaglia D'Oro filly from dual G1 winner Miracles of Life for $1 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale and a Vancouver filly for $950,000 at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.

Exhilarates boasts an impressive pedigree, being the second foal of dual G1 winner Samaready, a half-sister to G2 winning 2YO Night War.

Samaready has a 2YO colt by All Too Hard and is in foal to I Am Invincible.

There was more success for Godolphin last Saturday with a pair of promising winners by Alizee's sire Sepoy.

The unbeaten Pandemic recorded an impressive win at Randwick while Landstrasse won his maiden at Kembla Grange.

Pandemic is a half-brother to the G1 Golden Slipper winner Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) and stakes winner Palomares (Commands) from the Marauding mare Cataclysm.

Classy Godolphin-raced colt Bivouac scored an impressive first-up victory here taking his record to three wins (all at stakes level) and two placings from six starts. He settled in fourth place on the rails, eased into clear running rounding the home turn, raced to the front on passing the 200m and then drew away to score easily by just over four lengths. Sebrakate went to the front, set quite a good tempo and held on well for second in sound first-up effort. The lightly-raced Dirty Work raced outside the leader (Sebrakate) and did well in holding on to take third at only his third race start and his first run this preparation. Dubious was smartly away, was second early on but was shuffled back to second last in the six-horse field nearing the home turn. He then made late ground (under riding) for (6.3 lengths) fourth with Excess Funds fifth, tiring from third after a wide trip and racing keenly.
