Spring In The Step Of SA Breeders

3 minute read

Classy prospect Dalasan capped a big week for South Australian breeders Toorak Thoroughbreds when he won the G3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville.

Toorak Thoroughbreds also bred the exciting Sydney Listed winner Dawn Passage with both 3YOs offered and sold by Mill Park Stud at the 2018 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Dawn Passge made $150,000 and Dalasan sold for $80,000.

Dawn Passage won the Rosebud at Rosehill on August 10 and is set for the G1 Golden Rose at Rosehill while the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas trained Dalasan will be prepared for a tilt at the $2 million Caulfield Guineas in October.

Dalasan is the fifth Spring Stakes winner for Macdonald after his previous wins with Will Fly (1998), Spice Doll (2000), El Maze (2008) and Rebel Raider (2010).

The youngest runner in this year's Spring Stakes Dalasan was having just his fourth outing after winning his first two starts at Morphettville in February before his luckless second in the G2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington in March.

Dalasan's victory continues the long run of success for Macdonald and Harry Perks' Toorak Thoroughbreds, one of the most fruitful owner/trainer associations in Australian racing.

Their honour roll includes 3-time G1 winner Gold Guru, dual Derby winner and sire Rebel Raider, Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, Serious Speed (Thousand Guineas) and Go Indy Go (Champagne Stakes).

"Harry was selling Dalasan in Melbourne and I told him that you can't take less than $80,000 for the colt so he was knocked down to me," Macdonald said.

"Harry and his family kept some of the colt and we syndicated the rest."

Dalasan (Dalakhanio x Khandallah by Kitten's Joy) has already won $195,095 from his four outings.

He is the 53rd stakes winner by the Aga Khan's 2003 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Dalakhani, who spent three seasons from 2013 at South Australia's Cornerstone Stud.

Dalasan is one of two winners from two to race for the multiple stakes placed Kitten's Joy mare Khandallah, a family rich in North American black type.

Khandallah has an unraced 2YO by Dissident and produced a So You Think filly last week.

Khandallah was purchased for Harry Perks for $35,000 at the 2013 Easter Broodmare Sale by agent Adrian Hancock.

She will be covered by American Pharoah this spring."

Dalakhani, retired from stud duties in 2016, is also the sire of G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Reliable Man, who now stands at Westbury Stud in New Zealand, and G3 winner Guardini.

Dalakhani has sired 701 winners from 932 runners including 10 G1 winners.

The only three-year-old in the field and fresh up from a close second in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington in March, Dalasan gave his older opponents few excuses with a decisive win here, his third in four starts and maiden stakes success. He began quickly then eased a shade to sit fourth. Rounding into the home straight he inched closer and at the top of the straight, four deep, was ready to pounce. Taking some time to wind up he was third at the 200m, levelled up at the 100m then broke clear, out by an easy length at the post. Scales Of Justice sat second, three wide at the 600m, took over turning in, co-led at the 300m then led narrowly at the 200m but could not answer the winner to the post. Waging War snuck through along the fence at the 300m and kept going well for third from Despatch who battled on after co-leading at the 300m.
