There is a three-way tie at the top of the New Zealand Bloodstock Caulfield WFA Championship table after the super win by Scales Of Justice in Saturday's $1 million NZB Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.
Having his first start in the series, Scales Of Justice earned 10 points to move to the top of the table alongside the G2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) winner Mystic Journey.
She bypassed the Memsie Stakes to be reserved for her next start in the G1 Maybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 14.
Godolphin's evergreen star Hartnell earned six points for his third placing in the Lawrence Stakes and picked up another four with his fourth behind Scales Of Justice in the Memsie.
The Scales Of Justice story is a remarkable one, fluctuating from the high of his first G1 victory in Perth's Railway Stakes in 2016 to the low of a long injury lay-off and his rebound this year.
"It's great to get this win, he's a good horse," trainer Lindsey Smith said after the Memsie Stakes.
"He's had a lot of people help him over the years, like the vets and the farriers.
They've all done a remarkable job. I'm just the fortunate person to be here."
Scales Of Justice is taking Smith and his jockey Dean Yendall on a wonderful ride this spring.
"His nickname is Chopper and he's just a lovely horse to ride," said Yendall. "He takes everything in his stride.
"Onwards and upwards from here."
Scales Of Justice has now had 26 starts for 11 wins, 12 placings earning more than $2.1 million prize-money and is adding to a remarkable run of Group One success by the progeny of Arrowfield sire Not A Single Doubt.
Not A Single Doubt's progeny have won five of the last 17 G1 races run in Australia since April including two in seven days after Samadoubt landed the G1 Winx Stakes at Randwick on August 24.
His other G1 winners this year have been Kenedna (Queen of the Turf/Doomben Cup) and Qafila (South Australian Derby).
The son of Redoute's Choice is leading the Australian general sires' premiership after the first month of the season and has a spring full of expectation with the exciting Classique Legend to represent him in the $13 million Everest in October.
Scales Of Justice (Not A SIngle Doubt x Beymatila by Umatilla) was bred by Gerard and Kathy Hammond and was consigned to the 2014 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale by Millford Thoroughbreds where he was purchased by Boomer Bloodstock and Lindsey Smith for $180,000.
He is out of the unraced mare Beytilla, a mare that was beginner's luck for novice breeder Gerard Hammond.
"Beymatilla was the first mare I ever bought and she turned out to be a wonderful producer," Hammond said.
Also the dam of the black type performer Cruyfforme (Johan Cruyff), Beymatilla is out of a sister to the Listed winner Duke Abbey (Lord Seymour).
The family includes the G3 winners King Hooks (King Charlemagne) and Present Arms (Guns Of Navarone).
Millford Thoroughbreds' Richard Kerry remembered Scales of Justice as a yearling, describing him as "a lovely horse" with a fair bit of size and scope.
"He was quite athletic for his size and was a mature horse mentally.
"Boomer loved him at the sales and so did we. The horse has progressed and done an awesome job to justify everyone's early opinions of him.''
