Todd Lichti Has The Right Knack

3 minute read

Pedigree buff Todd Lichti has a successful knack in finding mares in foal. Take Miss Leonidas for instance.

I Am invincible mare Miss Leonidas is a daughter of Happy Play (Barathea {Ire}), who has left six other winners and she's a half-sister to the G1 Metropolitan H. winner Newport (Encosta de Lago).

The Shaun Dwyer-trained Miss Leonidas, winner of Saturday's G2 Caulfield Sprint, was bred by Sue Lichti from a Barathea mare her husband picked up for $10,000 while in foal to I Am Invincible, the boom sire who is now the most expensive advertised stallion at stud in Australia.

The mare Happy Play has a 100 per cent record at stud with all seven of her foals to race successful.

She is a half-sister to the G1 AJC Metropolitan and G2 Brisbane Cup winner Newport (Encost De Lago) and G1 placed Fresh Boy (Perugino), who went on to race successfully as Lim's Passion in Singapore.

Todd Lichti's success with similar mares has become a big profit maker for the family, having bred the G2 winner Villa Verde from another $10,000 mare.

"Todd trolls around for mares in foal and bought Villa Verde's mother in foal to Not A Single Doubt for $10,000 and he bought Miss Leonidas' mother in foal to I Am Invincible for $10,000," Dwyer said. "He's very, very good at it."

"A few years ago I bought Villa Verde and she went on to be very good and won $650,000."

A $95,000 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale purchase, Villa Verde was sold on her retirement from racing for $1.1 million at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

* Classy sprinter Streets Of Avalon could be heading overseas after the son of Magnus added the G3 Moonga Stakes to his record at Caulfield on Saturday.

Trainer Shane Nichols suggested a trip to Dubai could be in the pipeline for Streets Of Avalon after the 5YO gelding took his record to seven wins with 15 placings from 38 starts.

Streets Of Avalon (Magnus x Kamuniak by Black Minnaloushe) bounced back to form with an impressive one length win over WA trained Variation (War Chant) and Godolphin's French G1 winner Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit).

Streets Of Avalon is one of 20 stakes winners by Magnus, who stands at Sun Stud in Victoria.

He is co-owned by his breeder Warren Racing and is out of Kamuniak, a Black Minnaloushe mare who is a sister to the champion NZ 2YO Joker's Wild, a dual G1 winner of the Ellerslie Sires' Produce Stakes and Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes.

Their dam Miss Rory (Rory's Jester) is a three-quarter sister to the dam of the Listed winner and G2 placed Danehil filly Chuckle.

Nichols said he was loking at the idea of campaigning the gelding in Dubai between January and March where there are a range of races worth around $300,000.

Miss Leonidas followed her very good second in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 27 when having her second run this preparation, with a very good win here. She showed her customary pace to lead, set a smart tempo, held an advantage on turning for home and then fought back gamely to win well. God Of Thunder had a good trip in third place, got through on the inner at the 200m, briefly looked dangerous before fighting well for second, just in front of Malibu Style who raced behind the free-running leader and then battled on really well for a closeup third. Badajoz settled a number of lengths back in fourth place and made ground over the final stages to finish (1.7 lengths) fourth.
