Buchanan Mare Poised For Cup Success

3 minute read

Lucky News appears well suited third run from a spell in Monday’s Aberdeen Cup at Muswellbrook.

The mare returned from a freshen up last start with a closing fourth over 1200m at Canberra which came off a minor setback.

She will strip fitter for the outing and has found what looks an ideal race eight days later at Muswellbrook on Monday.

Lucky News contests the Shorty Cribb Aberdeen Cup (1280m) in which she looks to have a good sense of timing about her.

The honest mare is well drawn and has placed in two of her prior three outings at the course.

She is a tractable sort who should be able to settle prominent from barrier 1.

Considering her last campaign ended with a strong victory at Doomben, the Aberdeen Cup shapes as a race well within her reach.

That Doomben success returned Lucky News a new master Timeform rating of 86.

The daughter of Bradbury’s Luck ran to a Timeform rating of 80 at Canberra last start which highlights the room for improvement which is there.

Even if there is no improvement, what Lucky News produced last start has her rating highly amongst this field on 50 day weight adjusted Timeform ratings.

Power Supply shapes as the main danger.

The Kris Lees-trained runner was disappointing as favourite at this course and distance last start when a well beaten fourth behind Annandale Lass.

The gelding rises in grade on that outing however in exchange gets substantial weight relief.

Power Supply is perfectly poised down on the limit weight and seeing sharp improvement on his latest outing would come as no surprise.

Race depth seemingly drops off after this pair with a majority of the remaining runners either struggling for form, needing further or sitting outside of the handicap.

Collar, Harry Hotspur and Goldstone shape as the trio worth throwing into any multiples.

Lucky News however profiles as the pick of the bunch in the feature event at Muswellbrook on Monday, the Shorty Cribb Aberdeen Cup (1280m).
