Statistic Of The Week of French Racing News - 22nd July 2021.
With trainer Aidan O'Brien taking three of the four French Classics home to Ireland, it has felt like the division has been dominated by international opposition. But is this a correct analysis? We look at the first three placings in each of the three-year-old only Group One events in 2021…
Only one of six three-year-old only Group One races in 2021 (Poule d'Essai, Prix du Jockey Club, Prix de Diane, Prix Jean Prat and Grand Prix de Paris) has been won by a French horse – Coeursamba in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (1600m). Out of the eighteen placings available, France has achieved eight, Ireland seven, UK two and Italy one.
So what conclusion can be taken? Although it seems to be a year of international domination, French horses have still managed to achieve more placings than Ireland however simply lacked the quality to win these big races. Only the G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) did not have a French horse in the top three, with Baby Rider achieving the best result of the domestic horses in fifth.
