As the only Group One run over 1850m in Europe, the G1 Prix d'Ispahan (1850m) offers a unique test for high-class racehorses. It has been used as a stepping stone for both the mile and middle-distance categories, with winners going on to race in the G1 Prix Moulins (1600m) and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) alike.
The unusual challenge of the Prix d'Ispahan means it can be difficult to assess the quality of the winner and their likely future. Out of the last ten winners, all ran in Group One company on their following start but only two could win. Subsequent defeat has not meant Prix d'Isaphan winners cannot bounce back however – both Persian King and Maxios returned to winning ways in the G1 Prix Moulins (1600m) later in the season. It is also interesting to note that half of the victors went on to compete at 2000m+ whilst the other half dropped back to 1600m.
