Japan nominates six horses for latest Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe challenge

The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe will rely on Japan for its global presence after the nomination of six horses among a total entry of 101 for Europe’s richest race.

Dubai Sheema Classic runner-up Chrono Genesis, who ended last year by winning the Arima Kinen, heads the list which also features the already confirmed Deep Bond for the 100th anniversary of the ParisLongchamp showpiece on October 3.

As expected neither of last year's Japanese Triple Crown winners, Contrail or Daring Tact, has been engaged and there is no place for star Australian mare Verry Elleegant, some of whose owners had been keen to take up the challenge.

The big names from Europe are included, with Mishriff, who won the Sheema Classic after capturing the Saudi Cup, dual Classic heroine Love and Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tarnawa all entered in the €5,000,000 (£4.3m) contest

Completing the Japanese possibles are Lei Papale and Mozu Bello, first and second in this year's Osaka Hai, in which Contrail was third, Listed wnner Meiner Virtus and three-year-old Stella Veloce, who finished third in the recent Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas).

Japan is still seeking a first win in the Arc, in which Orfevre (twice), Nakayama Festa and El Condor Pasa have all endured near-misses.

Overseas ambitions will not be limited to the Arc with the connections of Loves Only You, who won Hong Kong's Queen Elizabeth II Cup after finishing third behind Mishriff and Chrono Genesis in Dubai, opting to target the Breeders' Cup.

Australia's Cox Plate had also been under consideration but trainer Yoshita Yahagi said the five-year-old mare will be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. He also plans to point Justin at the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar.
