Korea: Seoul Racecourse – Saturday October 6, 2018

3 minute read

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Picture: Korea Racing Authority

(3) EUNICE enters having run 2nd in a similarly weak maiden over the distance on September 1st. She was just beaten half a length that day and given the strength (or lack thereof) of today’s opposition, she can win this. In fact, it’s so weak that twenty-one race maiden (8) GOLD SEUTAK has her best chance to date of registering a win of her own.

She has two 3rd places from her latest three and should really improve on that this time. (1) SONGAM BARBIE has trialled again since debuting six weeks ago and may improve. (6) GANGSANUI ACHIM and (9) JEONGSANG GOLD are others who may trouble the place judges.

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

This race is restricted to juvenile maidens and five of the twelve have raced before. Among those, (2) RAON SERENA, with two 3rd place finishes, both at this distance, has been the standout and she should be at least matching those finishes today and has every chance of going even better.

Of the others who have raced before, (12) MISTER HERO did nothing wrong and can build on his 7th of 11 he achieved on debut. However, the favourite is likely to be first-time starter (6) WONDERFUL TRUTH. He blitzed a trial three weeks ago and if he brings that form to the races, should have far too much. Among the others appearing for the first time, (8) DOKDO YA and (10) MAMA ROMA also won their trials and may be considered first-up.

Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

More juvenile maidens here although this time we’ll side with the ones with previous experience. There are six of those in total and while (11) CHEON GI has the best finish position among them, running in 3rd on debut in mid-August, both (5) GAON FORCE and (6) WINNER BROWN ran faster times on their respective racecourse bows. Winner Brown previously made all in a trial and is well drawn today to get to the front and potentially lead all the way.

Gaon Force was slowly away and with a better start, can get much closer. Among the six first-timers, (1) WHITE COMET was the most eye-catching in trials – he finished ten lengths behind Wonderful Truth from race 2 but nevertheless, looked competent. (7) GEUMSEONGHWANGJE too put in a promising trial effort and could go well. As ever with the first-time starters, watch the market for additional clues.

Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Across three starts so far, (4) TOHAMSAN POWER has finished no worse than 5th and while he only managed 4th of 8 on his latest effort at this distance the margins weren’t big, and he overcame some bumping at the start to still run well. He’s very much the one they need to beat here. His two main rivals here, (1) HARD PRINCESS and (2) HWANSANGUI BIT both endured difficult starts in their respective latest outings too, but both ran well to record what was for both a first runner-up finish.

They seem to have a bit more to find than Tohamsan Power, but both should be aiming to at least place. (3) MAX THUNDER steps back up in trip after some encouraging showings at 1000M while (7) SAMAE STAR looks to be on the improve too and shouldn’t be too far away.

Selections

(4) Tohamsan Power (2) Hwansangui Bit (1) Hard Princess (3) Max Thunder

Race 5: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(4) ROMAN BLADE has already come up short when favourite a couple of times but ran well enough when 3rd behind a couple of useful horses at class and distance on September 1st. He was drawn in the widest gate that day and breaking from a more favourable position this time can get on pace early and potentially lead all the way.

(10) SHANGHAI JORDAN was a winner on debut and has held his own in two starts since. He lost ground at the start in his latest effort on September 8th but rallied well for 5th and looks to be the main danger here. (7) INDIAN ECO too put in a decent performance in 3rd at class and distance last time and can build on that here. (5) SUJEBI is up in class having got his maiden win at the eighth time of asking. He’ll need to improve but can be competitive. The experienced (2) PARTY POWER was 5th behind Roman Blade last time and can aim to at least match that today.

Selections

(4) Roman Blade (10) Shanghai Jordan (7) Indian Eco (5) Sujebi

Race 6: Class 4 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

A rare event for imported juvenile maidens and only one of the twelve entrants has raced before. And to simplify things, that’s the one we’re going to put on top. (3) ULTRA PUNCH got bumped about a bit at the start on debut on September 2nd but recovered to run on well for an encouraging 5th and he looks to be the safe option here.

The only one of the debut-makers to win a trial is (6) EAST KWAENAM. He did it in a fast time too and the Maclean’s Music colt slots in as second choice. (2) THUNDER BLADE beat a couple of these in his heat and will be backed as well first up while others to take note of are (5) GEUMSEOK DOLPA and (8) DAEGUNUI CHANG. As ever though in races like this, the market may be the best guide.

Race 7: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Very competitive handicap here but (11) MAPAEBONG enters having been a five-length winner over 1200M on his latest start on August 26th and while he is up in class today – and marginally in distance – the manner of it suggests there is more to come.

He led all the way that day from the inside gate but may have to employ slightly different tactics from a wide draw today. (12) HANIL GANGJA was a good 3rd at class and distance in arguably a stiffer contest than this on September 8th and is sure to be a threat here. Similarly (2) SKY STORM ran well for 4th in a decent event on September 2nd. He’s likely to show the way early here and can go well. (10) SIMON MISSILE is down in class and should improve while (7) SANTOS looks best of the rest.

Race 8: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Another really competitive handicap and (4) WHIZ REINA races for the first time in ten weeks but looked very good when trialling at the end of August. She’s had a very stop/start career so far but looks to have as much chance as any here. To Honor And Serve filly (11) CHOCO CANDY ran an encouraging 4th on debut over 1000M on August 18th and can build on that today while (7) MUNHAK TIGER has finished 5th in both starts to date and looks to have the potential to show some improvement today, both at 1000M and is expected to be on the early pace for his first attempt at this distance.

(2) WORLD STARK did nothing wrong on debut back in August while (10) RICHARDOFNEWSTEAD managed a pair of 2nd place finishes before a long layoff. He races here for the first time in thirty-seven weeks and while he didn’t exactly pull up trees in a September trial, he can’t be ruled out first-up.

Selections

(4) Whiz Reina (11) Choco Candy (10) Richardofnewstead (7) Munhak Tiger

Race 9: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

It took (7) CHEONGANG SEONG five efforts to figure things out but once he did, he quickly followed up with another win which has seen him rapidly promoted to class 4. His latest was a front-running score by four-lengths at this distance on September 2nd and while further improvement will be required here, he can win again.

Main danger is (5) MIGHTY WA. He was just beaten a head into 2nd at class and distance on September 2nd (and the jockey was fined for returning more than half a kilo heavier than when weighing out), continuing a run of near misses and he’ll surely be there or thereabouts again. (3) BEST CAMP and (8) SEVEN’S LUCKY came home 1st and 2nd when they raced each other at class and distance on September 1st. Best Camp carries an additional 3kg today but can still be respected. (12) STRONG MAN too enters having been a winner at this class on his latest start. That was at 1400M four weeks ago and while he too carries extra weight today, he’s another to be considered.

Selections

(5) Mighty Wa (7) Cheongang Seong (3) Best Camp (12) Strong Man

Race 10: Class 3 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

An also-ran in the Korean Derby, (7) CLEAN UP TEUKGEUP followed up by running a very close 2nd to Nongbon Daero at 1800M in July before finishing 5th in a competitive HRI Trophy at 1400M on international weekend last month.

He’s won twice at this distance already and will be strongly favoured to make it a third here. Korean Oaks also-ran (8) MAGIC TEN is the principal threat. She beat three of these on her way to 2nd place on her return to Seoul at this distance on September 1st and looks good for at least a repeat here. (5) AMENDA steps up to two-turns for the first time and should be in the hunt while (4) JISANG BIHAENG got demoted two places from 4th last time out for being naughty in the home straight and should appreciate the slight drop back in trip today. (10) TAMNA KING the best of the rest.

(7) Clean Up Teukgeup (8) Magic Ten (5) Amenda (4) Jisang Bihaeng

Race 11: Class 3 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(11) IGYEOJUMA comes in having finished 4th in a challenging class and distance affair on August 26th. That was his first try at this distance on just his sixth career start and if he shows a bit of progress today, he has a good chance of taking the honours. (10) CHUKACHUKA also enters off the back of a 4th place, in his case over 1400M and the experienced five-year-old should be a factor here.

(5) FIRE DREAM was an unexpected winner at class and distance on September 2nd. It was a big uptick in form and while he should be given more respect today, the fourth-place getter in that race, (7) WANGUI DAERO, who was favourite, is likely to be fancied to overturn that form. (1) JISANGMYEONGRYEONG and (6) JEOKBYEOK SHINHWA both had excuses on their respective latest starts and both can improve here.

Selections

(11) Igyeojuma (10) Chukachuka (6) Jeokbyeok Shinhwa (7) Wangui Daero

Race 12: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

(6) MR. CHAMPION was a class and distance winner in July and while he could only manage 4th when second-favourite last time, he can return to winning ways today against what is relatively modest opposition for this level.

(7) PRETTY BOY is better than his recent results suggest and can be a factor here while (5) CIRCLE DANCER may have been beaten nine-lengths by the very good Munhak Joy on September 8th but is promoted in class anyway and can be competitive in this company. (3) KENTUCKY YEONIN and (4) I.B.S. MARINE are others who should be competing for at least places.

(6) Mr. Champion (5) Circle Dancer (7) Pretty Boy (3) Kentucky Yeonin
