KOREA: Seoul Racecourse – Saturday December 22, 2018

3 minute read

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Picture: Korea Racing Authority

(6) TOUR BROTHER is the likely winner here. He’s shown more than the rest of them in his 2nd and 4th place finishes leading into this and a similar performance today should be enough to come out on top.

(2) TANTAN WINNER ran well for 5th on debut four weeks ago and is likely to join Tour Brother on the early speed. He’s one of two main threats along with (12) DAESEONG HANEUL, who struggled a little over 1300M on his second start last month but was beaten less than a length when 3rd at this distance on debut in October. (4) RECOVERY TAP and debut-maker (3) KAIZEN SILVER are others to look out for.

 Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens here with only four of the twelve having raced before. (12) CHEONROK finished 2nd on debut three weeks ago, briefly touching the front not far out. He ended up going down by four-lengths, but it was encouraging enough to give him a big chance here.

(7) MONEY BLUE was 4th and even further behind the winner on his own first start a month ago but the time was creditable, and he should come on for it. (3) WONDERFUL DIXIE hasn’t done anything wrong across two starts so far and could improve here. Of the first-time starters, (11) P.K. GUNJU made all to win a November trial and so long as he can overcome the outside gate to get on speed, should have a big chance first-up. (1) COLORS DE LAGO also ran well in trials and is another one to consider.

 Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

More juvenile maidens and once more only four of the twelve have previous racing experience. The only one of those to catch the eye even briefly so far is (7) SLING STONE, who ha run in a 5th and a 4th in two outings to date.

He’s well drawn to lead here and if it’ experience you value, he’s the pick. (8) MISS SUNSHINE did nothing too wrong on debut and previously impressed in a trial so may improve. Other than those it’s to the debut-makers we turn. (3) SMILE GIRL is the pick from trials, making all to win a tune-up only last week having previously run a decent time a month before. If she gets away well, she’ll be the one to beat. (5) GENERAL ROSE and (9) SPEED BELLE are two others who recorded impressive times in morning trials and can go well first-up. As ever in races such as this, watch the market.

 Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies only here. (1) LUCAS comes in after back to back runner-up finishes in similar races and while she’s been well-beaten by the winner both times, she has as much chance as any of going one better in this ultra-competitive contest.

(2) HEUNG KKAEBI ran a close 3rd over 1200M last time and steps up to this trip for the first time. She was the beaten favourite in that race but ran on well and the slight increase in distance may suit. (8) DAMON ANGEL is another stepping up in trip for the first time and should be able to cope with it. Draw a line through (4) BARAMUI SORI’s last outing, she’s shown much better than that and already has two 3rd place finishes at this level. (11) MONEY POCKET is up in class after a four-length score at this distance on what was just her second career outing last month and she’s sure to be a threat. (10) FAPP CAT was a good winner last time and is up in class too but likely to find it much harder.

 Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

A few of these come in off the back of near-misses but the recent form of (9) SKY MARINE looks the most convincing. True she’s had nine weeks off since her last outing, but she looks nicely in here and can win. (12) UP LIGHT ran a good 2nd over this distance on his first try at this class a month ago.

He’s proven tactically versatile so can overcome the wide draw and can match or even better today. (1) CHANGSEONG LUCKY and (5) DAE BYEONHWA both enter after very solid showings last time and can compete for at least places. (10) SHADOW MONEY was 5th last time over 1200M but the margins were tight, and he has every chance of getting closer today.

 Race 6: Class 4 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

All of these are imports and all are maidens. (8) CHEUNGDAM GENIE and (4) PHEONIX WOLF are the two who have the best chance of shedding that tag here having finished just half a length apart when 2nd and 3rd at this distance on December 1st.

That was Cheungdam Genie’s debut while for Phoenix Wolf it was a third effort. Phoenix Wolf should be on pace from the gate and both should contest the finish. (6) UNCLE OH beat a couple of these on his way to a solid 4th place on debut a month ago and should be in at least the placing hunt here. First-time starter (3) MUNHAK FIRE ran well in two trials and can also run well first-up today.

 Race 7: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Another tricky contest. (7) MUNHAK ARIARI offered little on debut all the way back in June but after four months off returned a much better prospect and has registered back to back 3rd places. He’s well drawn to get the lead here and can go all the way. (5) EAGLE’S GRIFTER had shown some ability across six outings up until this May with a best finish of 2nd.

He’s been off since then but looked very sharp when winning a trial at the end of November and can be a threat first-up today. (2) RICH MINE enters with recent form reading well and a place finish will be a minimum aim here. (11) I.B.S. QUEEN won two of her first three and while she didn’t go well on her latest is worth another shot here. Debut-maker (6) WILD FIGHT trialled well and should acquit himself handily.

Selections

(7) Munhak Ariari (5) Eagle’s Grifter (11) I.B.S Queen (2) Rich Mine

 Race 8: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(1) HURACAN was a gutsy winner at class and distance on November 24th and while he carries a couple of kilos extra weight today, he’ll be on pace once more and is the one to beat again. (9) RULE OF SUM ran 3rd in that race, just over a length back and he looks to be the main danger from a stable that is bang in form right now.

He came from well off the pace that day and will most likely finish well again. The experienced (5) LUXURY HAPPY enters with recent form reading well and looks at least a placing chance while (8) GARA GARA GA enters after several near-misses and while unlikely to be favourite this time, surely goes close again. (10) JANGSAN JEGUK races for the first time since September 15th and having actually beaten Huracan that day, can’t be completely dismissed.

 Race 9: Class 3 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(8) PALPAL VICTORY beat (1) LUCKY ROOKIE by half a length as the pair came home 2nd and 3rd over class and distance on December 1st. Lucky Rookie was favourite that day, but it was his first try at two-turns. He should have come on for that run and can win here. Palpal Victory should go very close too although the biggest danger could well be (11) K.N BLUE.

He saw a run of three straight wins come to an end when up at 1800M on November 25th. Nevertheess, he ran 2nd, beating three of these in the process and looks to have plenty more development in him. (4) SARYEONI HEALING ran 3rd to K.N Blue in that race and has placing claims once more whole (5) TAMNA KING should be in the hunt as well.

Selections

(1) Lucky Rookie (11) K.N Blue (8) Palpal Victory (5) Tamna King

 Race 10: Class 1 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 150 Million

(3) WINNER GOLD beat four of these on his way to victory at class and distance on November 25th, coming from well back to score by three-lengths. He’s under a similarly light-weight today and while this race is tougher, he can win again. (2) SHAMROCKER was 2nd that day but it was a sign of a return to form and he can get closer to the winner this time.

The class of the race comes in the shape of (12) SILVER WOLF. Last year’s champion filly/mare has had a tougher 2018 but has still run well in the very best company. She gives weight away to most here but can’t be ruled out. Nor can (1) CHEONI STORM. His only outings since an excellent 2nd place in July’s Busan Mayor’s Cup have been in the Korea Cup and President’s Cup. He is carrying the most weight of all but has plenty of talent. A slightly late-developer, (8) CHEONGDAM JEWANG has found himself rapidly up from class 3 to class 1 on the back of two exceptionally good performances. It’s a big ask to keep it going here as he’s up in trip as well as class, but don’t completely rule it out.

Selections

(12) Silver Wolf (8) Cheongdam Jewang (2) Shamrocker (1) Cheonji Storm

 Race 11: Class 3 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Another wildly competitive contest to round out the card. (1) HAE HU is a winner of four from eleven so far and enters having finished 2nd in both his last two outings.

He steps back slightly in trip today and can win. (8) MUNHAK TSUNAMI found the Nonghyup Chairman’s Trophy a little too tough on what was just his third career start last month and first at further than the minimum, but he can get closer today. (5) PRINCE MEMORY race for the first time since winning in July and looked in good order behind two top class horses in a trial at the end of November. (2) NAUI BICHYEO and (7) ONE IN A BILLION are others in the hunt.

Selections

(5) Prince Memory (1) Hae Hu (8) Munhak Tsunami (7) One In A Billion
