Seoul Racecourse & Busan Racecourse – Sunday, 23rd June 2019

3 minute read

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Picture: Korea Racing Authority

A field of twelve Korean-bred gallopers take to the track in the first where there appears a handful of chances. (10) JEONGMUN SARANG has ran a couple of handy races at his past couple of starts. The son of Clear Attempt finished a distant third last time out when settling on speed. A lack of depth in this race gives the three-year-old a reasonable chance to break maiden status. First starter (5) SAEROUN BOBAE trialed well in early June when running 1:02:2 for the 1000m. She had her mind kept on the job with the stick in the trial but ran it out fairly. She did lead in the trial so expect her to jump and run. (7) SEUNGNI JEONSEOL handed in a better performance last time out when third behind Hwaryong. She ran a decent time for the 1000m as well suggesting she may provide a forward showing. (2) SEOUL CITY is drawn ideal and can albeit disappointing last time out, can be considered an each-way chance. (1) SEONGPAJANG and (5) MIRACLE HOPE are others likely to attract support. Tough race.

Selections (10) Jeongmun Sarang (5) Saeroun Bobae (7) Seungni Jeonseol (2) Seoul City

Race 2: Class 4 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

A field of ten imports will line up in the second with all but one looking to crack their first maiden win. (2) SOULY MAJESTIC is the one galloper that has broken through for a maiden win. The three-year-old filly sat on speed last time out pulling away for a five length win. She goes up four kilograms for the victory but will still give punters a good sight. (8) GO GO BI is an each-way chance after running third over the 1200m last time out. The filly can settle back in the run and produce a nice turn of foot. (6) ALIBABA MARINE has the services of Moon Se-Young once again after finishing third behind Winner Brown last time out. Expect further improvement today from the son of More Than Ready. (4) TAP MAGIC MASTER has had eight starts to date and placed twice. The Australian bred can run into the minor money.

Selections (2) Souly Majestic (8) Go Go BI (6) Alibaba Marine (4) Tap Magic Master

Race 3: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

There appears to be an abundance of speed engaged in the third on the card. Last start winner (2) HWANGGEUM DOYAJI has shown promise in her three starts to date. Kim Yong-Geun employed a change of tactics last time out when working forward early on the Colors Flying filly. She led throughout for a solid two length victory. Expect a similar racing pattern to be applied here. (3) INDY LADY has been consistent in this company of late and a second win for the chestnut does not appear to be too far away. The three kilogram claim of Moon Sung-Hyeok will assist her chances. (9) SEMYEONG STORM is another that has started his career of in good fashion. Tanaka Mazakazu has been aboard for all four runs to date with the most recent a third behind Haneul Narae. (4) AMARONE looks a place chance on recent performances

Selections (2) Hwanggeum Doyaji (3) Indy Lady (9) Semyeong Storm (4) Amarone

Race 4: Class 5 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

A field of ten will take two turns in the fourth on the card. (6) LUCKY BONGHWA was solid last time out when finishing second behind Firstige. The chestnut overcame the outside gate after receiving a heavy knock at the start to sit second in the run. With the claim of Kim Deok-Hyeon he looks a big chance of breaking his maiden. (2) HOPE KINGDOM is another that is yet to break maiden status but gets a good opportunity in this event coming of a runner-up performance behind Choegang Party. Expect the Animal Kingdom gelding to be on-speed and run through the line well as per last start. (9) STAR LIST let down nicely last time out over the 1700m. Park Eul-Woon stays aboard but will have to overcome an awkward draw. (10) CHEONNYEONUI BI broke through last time out over the 1700m when coming from well back in the field. Top rider Kim Yong-Geun stays aboard.

Selections (6) Lucky Bonghwa (2) Hope Kingdom (9) Star List (10) Cheonyeonui Bi

Race 5: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

A compact field of eight Korean-bred gallopers take to the track in the fifth all looking for their first win. (6) CHUNGDAM HORANGI looks one of the better bets on the card after finished second last time out behind Cheonnyeonui Bi. The Rock Hard Ten three-year-old was shuffled back through the field before the turn but ran home well to be beaten 2.5L. Expect improvement at his third start. (2) JUNGDONG DOKJU ran on well in the same race when finishing third. She has drawn better for this assignment meaning Tanaka Masakazu may be able to settle her closer to the speed. She has had a run of bad draws. (3) DALLYEORA SOKBO finished third last time out over the six furlongs when he was sent out at short odds. He steps back up to the 1700m in this event. (4) CARROT SEEKER has had fourteen starts for just the one top three finish. He fell in a hole last time out after sitting on speed. He looks a place chance at best.

Selections 6) Chungdam Horangi (2) Jungdong Dokju (3) Dallyeora Sokbo (4) Carrot Seeker

Busan Race 2: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(11) NUMBER ONE STAR has a win and two runner-up finishes in three starts so far. His latest saw him run 2nd on his first try at this class over 1300M. He stretches out to a mile for the first time today but it could well suit and he should be right in the hunt. (12) CHANGE BACK remains a maiden after four attempts but steps up in class having been 2nd on his first try at a mile a month ago. He looks to have wins in him and has little to fear here. Another maiden is (1) TORNADO KING, but he's been getting closer and ran 2nd in a competitive heat last start and could well be on pace from the inside gate here. On the subject of maidens, (6) ONNURI GANGJA remains one after 53 attempts but comes in having finished 2nd in both his latest two and there's no reason why he can't place again. Fellow worthy plodder (4) BULMYEORUIMARIPGAN is also capable of running into some money in this company.

Selections (11) Number One Star (12) Change Back (1) Tornado King (6) Onnuri Gangja

Race 6: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Twelve Korean-bred gallopers line up in the sixth at Class 4 level. (6) DADDY GLORY looks as if she will take some beating after finishing second to Smile Girl in the Tokyo City Keiba Trophy. She drops back to the 1200m which will not thwart her chances. Leading jockey Moon Se-Young will be legged aboard once again. (1) HURACAN was sent out at a short quote last start only managing third. The speedy type has drawn this inside and will take some gunning down over the six furlongs. (2) FOREVER WINNER has been racing well in this company. The Vicar filly finished third last time out behind Back To Back and the run prior she won in this grade. She has to carry 55.5kg but she has been racing well of late. (3) RICH RULES has been elevated to Class 4 company after several placed performances in Class5 company. The filly possesses early speed and should work forward early.

Selections (6) Daddy Glory (1) Huracan (2) Forever Winner (3) Rich Rules

Busan Race 3: Class 4 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

(4) STAR ROAD secured his maiden win at the fourth time of asking, coming from well off the pace to score over 1400M on May 26th. He's up in trip and is also asked to carry an additional 3kg here, but looks to have the class to overcome it. (2) INDIAN GANGJA and (3) I'M YOUR HOPE came home in 2nd and 3rd when they raced other at class and distance three weeks ago. Both have placing claims today too with Indian Gangja once more the slightly favoured of the pair. (7) BOBAE DREAM's maiden win had been coming and she achieved it at the eleventh tome of asking on May 31st. She is accordingly up in class but should be competitive. (9) CURLIN FANTASY is still a maiden but enters with recent form reading well and has placing claims while (5) GLOBAL JILJU is among a number of others who could get close.

Selections (4) Star Road (2) Indian Gangja (7) Bobae Dream (9) Curlin Fantasy

Race 7: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

Nine gallopers line up over the 1800m in the seventh race where the main chances will have to carry plenty of weight to victory. (2) HEUNGBOK DREAM was superb last time out when running away for a three length victory over the 1800m. The Kim Dai-Keun trained galloper goes up three kilograms for the win but his class looks as if it will get him a long way in this race. (9) BENEDICT carries the equal top weight of 57kg. He finished second behind Heungbok Dream and should be able to close the margin on him in this event. The outside draw will make his assignment harder as he does his best work when on speed. (4) SAMSAM VICTORY has been in this class for quite some time and did salute in similar company two starts back. The four-year-old responds well to Cho Han-Byeol and should be considered an each-way chance. (7) HWANSANG STAR steps up in class after being consistent in Class 4 company. The three-year-old is yet to break maiden status but gets in with a light weight.

Selections (2) Heungbok Dream (9) Benedict (4) Samsam Victory (7) Hwansang Star

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(5) MYEONGSIN POWER was a shock winner over this distance on June 2nd. The odds are against a repeat but he warrants more respect this time around and a place is a serious prospect. (2) UNION QUEEN ran 3rd in that race and looks to have solid claims to overturn that form here. She's three starts into a comeback following seven months out, before which she won her first two starts very well. She looks to be getting back in touch and today could be her day. (6) YONGYEON has done his best work so far at 1000M but has proven capable at further and with a fast start, should be involved at the business end of the race. (3) TOUGH GREEN drops back in trip and into consideration while (11) QUEEN OF CAPTAIN returns for the first time this year and trialed up in encouraging fashion in May.

Selections (2) Union Queen (6) Yongyeon (3) Tough Green (11) Queen Of Captain

Race 8: Class Open (2000M) Sports Chosun Cup (Listed) Allowance / KRW 200 Million

  • Palpal Victory: Consistent four-year-old in Class 3 company and may find this competition tough with no spread in the weight scale. Handy draw but appears a rough place chance up against the better classed horses.
  • Honey Butter Nino: Hasn't won since July last year. Has ran a couple of places at odds in the past few months. Ham Wan-Sik jumps aboard for the first time. Place appears best chance.
  • Seouri Byeol: Went around in the Tteuksom Handicap when settling at the tail and running on fairly to beat half the field home. Form prior was acceptable in Class 2 grade but has been quite some time between runs.
  • Simple Life: Finished second last start in Class 2 company behind Super Socks. Looking for his fifth win at start seventeen and recent form has been good. Does his best racing on a dry track so look for conditions on the day.
  • Alphakhan: One of the main players when finishing third last time out behind the in-form Flying Munning. Produced a good sectional last time out and should sit closer to the speed in this event with a better draw.
  • Shark Daejanggeun: Eye-catching performance last start when coming from dead last on the turn to finish second behind Global Munning. If the paces is clapped on up front he will be running over the top. Consistent type.
  • Fast Fashion: Has won two Class 4 events in a row leading into this but the competition is tough with little spread in the weights. Place chance.
  • Senta Poba: Had his first attempt in Class 2 company last start and after settling on speed capitulated in the run home. Looks a hard assignment.
  • Saryeoni Healing: Has finished midfield at his past few runs in Class 2 company. Would need to improve a few lengths to figure.
  • Jejui Haneul: Korean Oaks winner a couple of years ago, and she has a big prizemoney purse to go with her race record. Hasn't backed up this preparation and looks safely held.
  • Burui Gori: Racing well in Class 3 company winning two of his past two stars and still early on in his racing career. Considered at least an each-way prospect in this event but this is an acid test.
  • Choinma: Has been quite some time between drinks but has been consistent in Class 2 company which reads well for this event. Moon Se Young will partner the four-year-old with his biggest task overcoming the wide draw.
Selections (4) Simple Life (6) Shark Daejanggeun (5) Alphakan (12) Choinma

Busan Race 5: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

Four of these raced each other over a mile at this class on May 26th with (12) BAENGMANDORI finishing the best of them in 2nd place. He's one of the fancies here too but with an extra couple of kilos on his back as well as an extra furlong, some of the others should come into play too. (1) GYEONGJUUI DUREBAK led for much of that race, her first at this level and she can have come on for it, while (11) RAON JEONSEOL didn't really quicken when asked but is capable of better. (2) DAEHO MYEONGGA is up in class following a good win on a wet track over a mile a month ago. A couple of previous efforts at this distance haven't gone especially well but he shouldn't be ruled out here. (8) CHEOLBI is already a class and distance winner and beat a couple of these on his way to 3rd place last time out. (7) CHIEF LEADER is up in class after a good win at this distance at the end of May and is very nicely weighted to go close again.

Selections (7) Chief Leader (12) Baengmandori (8) Cheolbi (1) Gyeongjuui Durebak

Race 9: Class Open (2000M) Gyoeonggi Governor's Cup (KOR G3) Allowance / KRW 350 Million

  • Reign – Well beaten in the Korean Oaks when finishing a distant seventh. Strongest form is a Class 6 win two starts ago suggesting this will be a tough task once again.
  • Amazon Yeogol – Only beat one home in the Korean Oaks when finishing more than thirty lengths behind the winner Deep Mind. Prior to her run in the Oaks she was collecting some reasonable prize money in restricted grades but this level does appear to challenge her.
  • Bangtanma – Class 5 winner two starts back and followed that effort up with a midfield performance in the Oaks. Her one win was over the 1300m and based on her effort in the Oaks she will be tested by the class and also the distance.
  • Mamma Roma – Respectable performance is the Oaks when finishing fifth. Finished just over a length from second place in the Oaks and ran through the line doggedly. Her form prior to the Oaks was good albeit in Class 5 company. Rough place chance as she seems as if she will run the 2000m out.
  • Deep Mind - Winner of the Korean Oaks in devastating fashion; beating the second horse by eight lengths. Had proved herself competitive in Class 3 company prior to the Oaks and when the favourite on the day (Dae Wan Ma) misfired the Oaks was hers for the taking. The three-year-old boys have failed to back up big performances this year so if she can do the Oaks/Governor's Cup double it will be a big feat. The one to beat on paper.
  • Sinbihan Yeoin – One of three runners not coming out of the Oaks. Just the one win and a handful of placings from ten career starts. Comes off a last start second in Class 5 company over 1200m suggesting she will find this tough.
  • Dia Road – This race's X-Factor with her having just her fourth career start and winning all three to date. Her most recent win in Class 4 company was excellent when pulling away and being eased up on the line to win by eight lengths. The win was over the 1700m where she did it strong so the 2000m should not worry her. She has six weeks between runs, one more than the Oaks runners.
  • Heung Buja – Gallant second in the Korean Oaks when sitting behind the leader throughout. She was dour on that day suggesting she is another that will see the 2000m out. This is supported by the fact she also won a Class 4 1700m before heading to the Oaks. She jumped from a similar gate in the Oaks and worked forward early on so expect Lee Joon-Chel to put her into the race early on.
  • Clear Geom – Another runner that did not go around in the Oaks. Has had five starts over the 1700m where she has accounted for herself well winning two and placing twice. Should run the journey out but her class appears to be the query.
  • Smile Girl – The second of Lee Shin-Young's gallopers who comes out of the Oaks. She finished ninth in the Oaks appearing one-paced to the line. She is yet to win beyond 1400m and would need to improve to figure.
  • Dae Wan Ma – Sent out the $1.90 favourite in the Korean Oaks and fell far short of expectation. Ran second behind Global Chukje in the KRA Cup Mile which punters took plenty of confidence from when she headed to the Oaks. She won the Sports Seoul Cup earlier in the year against the colts but that was over 1400m. There is a question with the 2000m and safe to say she will start at a longer price.
  • Miss Fact – Third in the Korean Oaks after being near the tail at the top of the straight. She produced the fastest sectional in the race and she will benefit greatly if the speed is poured on for the first half of the race. She won successive races in Class 5 & 6 company before heading to the Selangor Turf Club Trophy where she finished sixth. She must be considered after her recent performance in the Oaks.
Selections (7) Dia Road (5) Deep Mind (12) Miss Fact (11) Dae Wan Ma

Busan Race 6: Class 1 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

An absentee from the SBS Sports Sprint at Seoul earlier this month, (3) KING OF GLORY comes in here having won three of his latest four, with the only defeat among them being in April's Busan Ilbo Cup. His latest start saw him record a comfortable class and distance win on May 12th and while he is carrying an extra 2kg today, can prevail again. (2) FINEST WARRIOR was an also-ran in the SBS Sports but looks nicely in here for a return to the money. (5) DROP THE BEAT underwhelmed too in the same race and while his task is harder under 57kg, he has ability. (4) BAENGMUNBAEKDAP intriguingly drops down in trip for the first time in a long time and could go close. The up in class (6) HANEOL NURI, a winner at the distance last time out, is the wildcard.

Selections (3) King Of Glory (2) Finest Warrior (4) Baengmunbaekdap (6) Haneol Nuri

Race 10: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

A field of eight will line up over the 1400m where the majority of runners have to significantly drop back in distance. One galloper that has been performing well over this distance is (1) BRIGHT CAT. The Wildcat Heir five-year-old has finished second behind City Star and Sanggam Mama at his past two starts. He appears to bring the best form into the race for the seven furlongs. (5) WINNER GOLD comes out of the YTN Cup where he finished eighth in a classy field over the 2000m. He has performed well over the 1400m previously with the concern being the 58kg he must carry. (7) HEUNGRYONG is always competitive in this grade. Lee Joon-Chel reunites with the five-year-old who normally does his best work late. (4) TOSCONOVA CAT was sent out a short priced favourite last time out when second behind Gangtoma. The four-year-old normally settles midfield before running on late. He drops back two furlongs to the 1400m.

Selections (1) Bright Cat (5) Winner Gold (7) Heungryong (4) Tosconova Cat

Race 11: Class 4 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

The last on the card has plenty of gallopers in good form including (4) GLOBAL CHEONHA. The three-year-old went down less than a length last time out behind a handy type in Best Line. He will have to carry 56kg but he is drawn perfectly for his racing pattern and looks a big chance. (6) MENI GRAND is looking for three in a line. The Menifee filly was convincing last start when winning by three lengths however this is much tougher. (5) RAON SERENA won in similar company two starts back before finishing fourth last start behind Fast Fashion. The three-year-old is building a good record. (8) BEYOND OVER finished second in this grad last start and once again gets in with a light weight. She has drawn somewhat awkwardly but normally settles back regardless.
