Busan Racecourse – Friday, 17th July 2020

3 minute read

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

Picture: Korea Racing Authority

Juvenile maidens kick the weekend's action off with four of the twelve having raced once before. The race sees a return to Korea for jockey Djordje Perovic who had a successful few years in Seoul and it's not impossible he could start with a winner. (5) BAEK SEOL QUEEN is one of those with previous experience having run 4th on debut at this distance on July 3rd.

She was well back behind the winner but should have come on for that and can improve. Putting in a similar debut a couple of weeks earlier was (2) YEONGWON POWER, who came from off the pace to also run 4th at the same distance. There are loads of chances among the newcomers, many of whom trialed up very similarly. (12) WINNER'S MAN is the first foal from a dam who won six times in Korea and was nicely bred herself. He trialed well albeit on a sloppy track and looks nicely in first-up. (9) BAEK PUNG and (7) TWO TWO WILD THING both showed a bit of speed while (10) B. K. LOOKS also showed some promise.

Selections (5) Baek Seol Queen (12) Winner's Man (7) Two Two Wild Thing (2) Yeongwon Power

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

More juvenile maidens with again four of them having raced once each before and the remaining eight making their debuts. (8) TOP MATE put in a good shift on debut on June 19th, running on for 2nd behind good winner Happy Witch. It was a decent performance in a useful time, and he looks the one to beat here. Experience should also be beneficial for (4) WORLD CHEONSA, who ran 3rd in that very same race. She showed at the front early and is likely to do the same again from a nice draw. Seo Seung-un climbs aboard in what is another plus. The first-timers didn't exactly pull up trees in their respective trials but there were positive signs from the likes of (3) LUCAS SUN and (9) CENTUM THOR.

Selections (8) Top Mate (4) World Cheonsa (9) Centum Thor (3) Lucas Sun

Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Ten three-year-old maidens go here, seven of them fillies. It's a colt who may be the pick though with (2) GABO TODAY resuming for the first time since December. He ran well in that race before the layoff, his second career start, ending up 3rd of 12 over 1000M running on strong. He went through a trial just last Saturday, posting a fast time and he has every chance of a first-up win today.

(10) QUEEN VRONSKY showed promise when 3rd on debut at this distance on June 10th, coming from off the pace and running on well. The wide draw shouldn't be an issue and she's a chance here. (6) TOP LUCKY weakened late on over 1300M three weeks ago having led for much of the way and may appreciate the slight drop back in trip today. She's well drawn to get to the front once more. (1) WONDERFUL SMARTY showed little in four starts before the shutdown but has trialed up well since and can improve today. Similarly, (7) GEUMA GOOD POINT has raced just the once and can aim for a fresh start here having shown some promise in trials.

Selections (2) Gabo Today (10) Queen Vronsky (6) Top Lucky (7) Geuma Good Point

Race 4: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

After winning a trial, (3) GREAT GOOD ran 2nd on debut behind a horse who ran in a ridiculously fast time for the 1000M, Smart Value. Great Good herself ran well too and she won't have to improve much on that, if at all, to win here. The extra furlong should only be in her favour. (11) SEUNGNI QUEEN is the only other one in the race who has troubled the scorers so far. That was a 2nd place on what was her latest start in February and while she didn't catch the eye when trialing in June, she may have enough about her to challenge for a place again. (6) ACHIM BIT debuted reasonably well in 6th place behind Great Good three weeks ago and can be in the frame here. Likewise, (10) SECOND WIND didn't do too much wrong on her debut either and has a platform to build on today. (9) CRONUS too is sure to have his backers to improve given the trainer/jockey combination.

Selections (3) Great Good (10) Second Wind (11) Seungni Queen (6) Achim Bit

Race 5: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

More three-year-old maidens, none of whom have shown very much in their respective outings to date. (5) DAESEUNG E ran creditably enough for 4th place on debut at this distance on June 26th. The time wasn't fast but it's a solid foundation to build on and in this limited company, she can get closer. (3) OMEGA GIRL was similarly slow when 4th at 1200M four weeks ago having briefly touched 2nd place in the home straight. That experience should be beneficial and there can be improvement. (9) SUN ALPHA never got going on debut and finished well back behind a very good winner. He had previously shown a decent turn of foot in trials so we'll draw a line through that debut and give him another chance today. Similarly, (7) WIND PARK weakened on debut behind Daeseung E but had previously won a trial and shouldn't be written off just yet. In a race with very little in the way of early speed, she may well get to the front.

Selections (5) Daeseung E (9) Sun Alpha (7) Wind Park (3) Omega Girl

Race 6: Class 6 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 25 Million

The speed map in the sixth looks very limited with the majority of the field flat-footed out of the gates. (4) JANGSAN PRIDE goes on top based on a good trial during the hiatus. He has had the two starts with eighth his best performance to date. The two races he lined up in were 2yo races where there were some handy types. This is a weak race and if he is going to show us something, it will be in this event. (2) CAPSTONE is another yet to show much with the filly's best performance to date a sixth, which was last start over the 1200m. She passed a couple in the straight and should be suited by the extra furlong. (12) TRUE WARRIOR will fill the outside gate but does come off a placing over the mile first up last start. They handed in a slow time in his last start but if he can handle the 56.5kg he is capable of running in to the money. (5) SATURDAY QUEEN looks next best after hitting the line strong last time out behind Honor Queen.

Selections (4) Jangsan Pride (2) Capstone (12) True Warrior (5) Saturday Queen

Race 7: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A good little maiden this with plenty arriving at the gate with claims on making their breakthroughs. (5) SEUNGNI TOUT almost managed it last time out, running a close 2nd over 1400M. That continued his steady improvement across three outings to date and Bart Rice's colt steps up to a mile for the first time with every chance. (6) YEOWANGUI MISO was 3rd behind Seungni Tout in that race on June 19th. That makes it two 3rd place finishes in two starts for the filly and the way she ran on last time suggests she too will appreciate the additional trip today. As for those with experience at a mile already. (1) DOCTOR SQUALL looked a different animal on his return to racing two weeks ago, finishing 2nd at the distance with a strong run late and he warrants consideration. (3) MULTI POWER too ran on well for 3rd at this distance three weeks ago and is another who can come off the pace. (2) SOL INVICTUS was 6th behind Multi Power in that same race and can come on for the run while (11) TIZ LINE is best of the rest.

Selections (5) Seungni Tout (6) Yeowangui Miso (3) Multi Power (1) Doctor Squall

Race 8: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

The Class 5 sprinters line up in the eighth where over half the field is likely to look for a position on speed. (9) CROWN FUNKY is the on top selection with some confidence here after the Officer filly clocked a good time over the 1200m last start, when second behind Perfect Jewang. Expect rider Lee Yong-ho to charge forward when the gates fly back and sit prominent, if he can position her at worst one off the fence, she should be strong to the line. (4) SPEED KINGDOM resumed in good style when second over the 1200m behind Naega Saegangja. The Clear Attempt colt is another that has plenty of early speed, expect Iaonnis Polluis to position his mount on speed. (3) HIDDEN BOY comes out of the same race as Crown Funky where the four-year-old finished fifth. With so much speed engaged in the race he is one that can reel off a strong sectional and be the beneficiary if they go too hard early on. (8) JUST WIN lines up for his fourth start. He comes off a good performance first up when fourth behind Great Boss. He should take improvement from the run as he looks to break maiden status.

Selections (9) Crown Funky) (4) Speed Kingdom (3) Hidden Boy (8) Just Win

Race 9: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Good race here. (8) MAGIC PARTNER stepped up to this class for his first race back after the shutdown and the Tapizar gelding performed well, coming home 3rd behind the promising Mr. Valor. Jo In-kwen rides again and will most likely send him to the front early and he has claims to win. So too does (3) CHEONGDAM FIRE. After winning in debut last October – beating future KRA Cup Mile winner Touch Star Man – he seemed to lose his way a bit before the shutdown but the break may have done him some good as he looked strong when 3rd to Wonderful Flash over 1300M. He finished strongly and looks ready to tackle 1400M again. (4) FLYING KINGS enters off a very useful 3rd behind Power Train over a mile last month. He's a consistent type who shouldn't be too far away. (10) JEONSEOLUI BULKKOT was 6th behind Flying Kings in that mile race last month but improved to 4th when dropped back to 1400M two weeks ago and can aim to match or better that today. A model of consistency is (11) POWER WONDERFUL, who led briefly at 1800M on June 26th before ultimately finishing 4th. He won't be far away from the money again.

Selections (8) Magic Partner (3) Cheongdam Fire (11) Power Wonderful (10) Jeonseolui Bulkkot

Race 10: Class 5 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A compact field of nine gallopers will line up in the tenth event as they go over the two turns. (5) NEW PROSPECT is the on top selection in a race that we have limited confidence in. The chestnut finished eighth first up in a relatively strong Class 5 event and was not beaten all that far. With some improvement he should be considered a winning chance in a weaker assignment. (7) GEUMA KAIROS broke maiden status last time out when having his first start over the mile. He will step up once again to the 1800m. His time was slow for the mile on a good track, he is another with some improvement can be one of the main players. (3) DORAON SINSEDAE went around in Class 4 company last start where connections obviously wanted him to go over 1800m. He was run down in the straight by the stronger company, the four-year-old can figure with the drop in class. (8) DOCTOR MIMI was a surprise winner last start in this class and grade. She goes up just the 2kg for the win and is capable of threatening again.

Selections (5) New Prospect (7) Geuma Kairos (3) Doraon Sinsedae (8) Doctor Mimi

Race 11: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

It's been a while since (7) CLEVER WILLIE recorded the latest of his two wins but despite having had a stop/start career, he's maintained consistency and his rarely far away. He looked good when 2nd to Miracle Dreaming three weeks ago at class and distance and today could be his day. (6) TITLE CODE pulled off a smart class and distance score on July 3rd, backing up from a very good trial performance in May. He carries a bit more weight today but should nevertheless go close. (10) SECRET LEGACY was a touch disappointing when 8th of 12 behind Clever Willie last start. She is better than that though and the addition of Seo Seung-un on board – who rode her when she won a fast trial in April – can only be beneficial to her chances. Speaking of trials, (9) VICTORY MAN looked very sharp when winning one on a very wet track last Saturday and so long as he didn't leave his race there, looks in with a shout today.

Selections (7) Clever Willie (6) Title Code (10) Secret Legacy (9) Victory Man

Race 12: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

There appears to be limited chances engaged in the twelfth with a field of eleven to face the starter over 1200m. (3) BIG PICTURE looks the one to beat coming off a good performance when finishing second behind Title Code first up. The Kim Young-kwan trained galloper was having just his second start in this class, with this assignment looking weaker than his last start. He is drawn perfectly in gate three to sit on speed and take some catching. (6) I'M YOUR FASHION will line up for his first run since the forced hiatus. The Old Fashioned colt was disappointing at his most recent run back in January when beating one home, he has since trialed in good fashion and can rebound first up. (1) QUEEN OF THE WORLD is a last start Class 5 winner and gets in light in the weights. The filly is best suited sitting on speed, which the inside draw will suit her down to the ground. She trialed well leading into her first up run. (9) HAPPY GATE comes out of an event which reads as a strong form line for this event. He is capable of filling a place.

Selections (3) Big Picture (6) I'm Your Fashion (1) Queen Of The World (9) Happy Gate

Race 13: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(4) BARBARIAN just came up short when seeking to extend his win streak to three over this distance on June 19th. The horse who beat him though was Daemangui Gil, who went on to run a very strong 2nd to Socks Go in a valuable Trophy race last Sunday and Barbarian, who looked like he needed the run, should be returning to winning ways today. (3) TWO TWO TURBO was 3rd in that race but was a full eight-lengths back so has plenty of form to overturn. He can place again. (8) MUNHAK SIGNATURE was further back still in that race but is better than that and previously ran 2nd to Barbarian at 1300M. He should have come on in fitness terms for that run last month and can get much closer today. (7) HWARANGUICHAMPION is a class and distance winner and returns to action for the first time since that February victory having trialed well in May. (9) BEYOND is another who perhaps didn't do himself justice last star, his first at class and distance, but who does have scope to improve.

Selections (4) Barbarian (8) Munhak Signature (7) Hwaranguichampion (9) Beyond

Race 14: Class 4 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

There are many chances engaged in the fourteenth where the riders will have the long run down the back straight to find a position. (7) YEONGGWANGUI FIGHT is one of those that will work forward early to find a position on speed as per his last start. The four-year-old comes off a second last start behind Yeongwon Jamaica when trying to lead throughout. He held on to second comfortably and should improve with the run under his belt. There isn't a lot of early speed engaged suggesting he should be able to cross with ease. (1) RAON TOWN has been consistent in his career to date. The chestnut comes off a midfield performance first up where he clocked a time over the 1800m that should see him competitive in this event. (8) CRAZY CONTI handed in a much improved performance last time out to finish second behind Hunch. The race wasn't the strongest but with some improvement he is able to finish in the money. (3) ONNURI GANGJA hit the line strong last start after settling at the tail. If he can keep in touch with them early, he can run into the placings.

Selections (7) Yeonggwangui Fight (1) Raon Town (8) Crazy Conti (3) Onnuri Gangja

Race 15: Class 2 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

(9) SPEED FURY looks a real talent having won six of eight so far including an emphatic class and distance score last time out on June 19th. He'll be tested by an additional 4kg on his back today but he should be more than equal to the task and can lead all the way to win again. With a 6.5kg advantage, the door is slightly ajar for (2) TOP DAY to prove his ability. A winner of four from nine, the colt, whose dam won the Korean Derby, was an easy winner over 1200M last start and steps up to class 2 for the first time. He's already won at a mile so the distance is no problem and any mistakes by Speed Fury can be capitalized on. (7) GREAT ROCK and (8) PERFECT BOSS are both experienced campaigners at this level and both are more than capable of earning some prize-money in this kind of company. (10) CUBAUI YEOLJEONG was well back behind a couple of these on his latest start in January but looked very well when winning a trial in June and can make a fresh start here.

Selections (9) Speed Fury (2) Top Day (7) Great Rock (8) Perfect Boss
