Marsh and Johnson combination dominate at Ellerslie

3 minute read

A picture perfect ride by Danielle Johnson paved the way for progressive mare Ruud Not Too to score her biggest win when she took out the Gr. 2 Rich Hill Mile at Ellerslie.

The victory capped a notable double for the four-year-old mare who had taken out the inaugural running of the Dunstan Feeds Rising Stars Championship Final at the venue just six days earlier. It was also the third victory on the day for both Johnson and trainer Stephen Marsh along with a second stakes victory for Albert Bosma’s Go Racing syndicates.

In a race run at the expected torrid pace, Johnson used her good barrier draw to have the Bernardini mare tucked away on the fence throughout the early stages. She began to get serious as the field approached the home bend and shot the mare through along the inner as pacemaker Matimba wobbled away from the rail early in the run home.

As she did six days earlier, Ruud Not Too established a winning break which her rivals couldn’t peg back as she went to the line a half length to the good of the fast finishing All Roads with Girl Of My Dreams clinging gamely to third.

Part-owner Ian Hogan was one of the members of the mare’s Go Racing Ruud Not Too syndicate on track to witness the victory. Hogan, who had begun his association with Go Racing through a share in Listed Karaka Million winner Ruud Awakening, was quick to pay tribute to Albert Bosma and his team after the race.

“She’s another good Bernardini, following on from Ruud Awakening, and we’re just having so much fun with her,” he said.

“It’s such a professional organisation and we’ve had some great times with them.”

Bosma, who started the day on a high through the win of Hasahalo in the Gr. 3 Barneswood Farm Eclipse Stakes, was thrilled with the performance.

“It’s a massive thrill on a big day and just a special feeling,” he admitted.

“It’s also a special effort from Stephen Marsh to back her up just six days after winning on Boxing Day and do the double.

“The owners have a very valuable mare now.”

Bosma indicated Ruud Not Too would now be set for the Gr. 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile at Trentham on the 28th of January with a possible attempt at the Gr. 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa in February also to be considered.

Rich Hill Mile (G2)

WT: 52kg Type: OPEN

This G2 Open Handicap mile was run at a solid clip throughout and saw mares fill four of the first five spots at the finish. Ruud Not Too after a good sit fourth or fifth the inner drove through into second at the 200m then grabbed the front soon after and never relinquished it. The 4yo mare has come up super this season and carrying 52.5kg she won by half a length in 1:34.01 to record her third win of four starts. Overall she has won five of thirteen starts and was today winning her first Group race and it came at G2 to go with a G2 second as a 3yo filly at this same carnival a year ago. All Roads was the lone male in the top five across the line and ran home strongly for second after sitting seventh the fence and then angling out at the 250m. He closed powerfully and at what was his first run in any Group race showed that this stage is well within range and he belongs there. Girl Of My Dreams ran a brave third under 58.5kg after sitting second and the 6yo mare has been racing honestly over the Summer so far. Rising Shot and Capella, both 4yo mares, ran a good fourth and fifth respectively and they came from third last and second last on settling. They were strong at the line and showed the female galloper reigns supreme in New Zealand racing at all levels and types of racing. Ronchi after a bad start did well for sixth under 59kg to be beaten two and a half lengths. Prince Of Passion and Big Dreamer ran well paying big prices with the latter coming from a lot further back on settling. Skyweka was just okay while the pacemaker Matimba weakened after being headed turning for home. Lasarla also did little the run home and Battle Time after a horror run wide stopped to finish last but was only beaten just over six lengths. This was the fastest run mile on the day by far and should produce many future winners especially since 4yo mares in the field finished first, fourth and fifth. All Roads the first male home is in for another good campaign while the 4yo male Ronchi ran a super sixth under 59kg after an awkward start that saw him last on his own early.
