Coleman keen on Whiskey Neat
Michael Coleman, fresh from Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m) success on Supera on Saturday, is looking forward to further black-type Te Rapa success this weekend.
Coleman’s mounts will include Whiskey Neat in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2YO Stakes (1100m).
‘’I rode him for the first time at the Te Teko trials on Friday and he trialled up really well,’’ Coleman said. ‘’He looks pretty smart and he should be a good ride.’’
The Tony Pike-trained gelding made his first appearance since finishing seventh in the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie on January 26 when he won his 800m Te Teko trial comfortably.
His Karaka Million 2YO performance was his first defeat in three starts. He won his debut at Otaki last November by 10 and a quarter lengths then beat the talented Aotea Lad in the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.
Bayliss trackside at Sha Tin
Jockey Jake Bayliss was in Hong Kong on Sunday to cheer home his brother Regan during his win aboard Champion Supreme in the FWD Insurance CCB (Asia) Handicap (1600m).
After taking the John Moore-trained three-year-old right back, Regan Bayliss threaded his way through the field and flicked the switch in the last 200m to pick off leader Cordyceps.
“We’ve had plenty of proud family moments but that’s definitely right up there with one of my favourites,” Jake Bayliss told the South China Morning Post.
“I’m lucky to have a voice left. I’ve just finished a contract in New Zealand and I had a week off so I came straight here to support him.”
Jake, who is a Group One-winning jockey like Regan, is preparing for a stint in Brisbane for the winter carnival and said he’d like to one day follow his brother to Asia.
“I’ll be based in Brisbane for three or four months and then I’ll have to make my decision of what the next move is after that,” he said.
“I’m not too far off putting an application in for Singapore, hopefully I get the thumbs up there but if not, I’ll go back to New Zealand. Singapore would be good and then Hong Kong is maybe the next step after that.”
