While the Listed Ipswich Cup went to the Queensland homebred Bergerac, the winners of the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (Man Booker) and Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (Ready To Prophet) came from far spread Magic Millions sales.

MAN BOOKER: A rare Queensland winner for the late WA-based sire Discorsi, Man Booker was purchased by Perth trainer Dan Morton for $25,000 at the 2014 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

The six-year-old has now earned more than $1 million, his 11 wins in 26 starts including the G2 WA Guineas and G3 Northerly Stakes and three other black type races.

Morton, no stranger to big race success at the Brisbane carnival, had tested Man Booker in G1 company in his first three Queensland starts.

Morton’s record in Queensland includes G1 wins with Scenic Shot in two Doomben Cups. He also took his crack sprinter Scenic Blast to the UK to win the G1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Man Booker’s dam is the unraced Danetime mare Morine. She been a fine producer, her other foals including the multiple stakes winner Achernar Star (Gingerbread Man) and black type placegetter Atacama Sky (Scandal Keeper).

Discorsi, a son of Galileo, died in 2015 at the age of 11 when his oldest progeny were only three.

Discorsi raced for WA owner-breeder Keith Biggs and trainer Lee Freedman before retiring to Yarradale in 2010.

A $1 million yearling purchase, he was a half-brother to the Biggs-owned G1 winning mare Sea Siren and champion WA sire Oratorio and won the Listed Gibson Carmichael Stakes at Flemington as a 2YO in 2006.

His dam Express A Smile also produced New Zealand G2 winner Lady Dehere, South African G2 winner Oracy and NZ Listed winner The Lady.

READY TO PROPHET : A Torryburn Stud bred 3YO daughter of Smart Missile, Ready To Prophet was purchased for $40,000 by Dynamic Syndications and Dean Watt Bloodstock at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Her victory in the race named after her co-trainer Gai Waterhouse took her record to three wins in nine starts for earnings of $251,070.

Ready To Prophet is out of the More Than Ready mare Ready To Live, a Listed winner in the US and dam of three other winners.

Ready To Live is a half-sister to the stakes performer Viva La Slew (Doneraile Court), the dam of US G1 winner Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron).

Ready To Prophet’s third dam Viva Sec (Secretariat) was a ten-time winner from the family of G1 winners Vicar (Wild Again) and Astronomer Royal (Danzig).

Ready To Live produced a filly by Wandjina last year and was subsequently covered by Rich Enuff.

BERGERAC: Trainer Steve Tregea and his family had cause to celebrate after their homebred gelding Bergerac, a son of Drumbeats, won the Ipswich Cup.

The Tregea family operation at Windemere Stud bred and race Bergerac, a son of their stakes placed Iglesia mare Miss Argyle, a sister to the stakes winner Diamondsontheinside and half sister to the dam of the G2 Queensland Guineas winner Express Air (Piccolo).

Miss Argyle, currently in foal to Whittington, is also the dam of the Listed winner Cheyenne Warrior (Not A Single Doubt and G3 winner Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice).

New Zealand’s Waikato Stud also welcomed the win as Ardrossan will stand his first season at the NZ nursery this spring.

Ardrossan won four races up to 1200m including G3 and Listed races in NZ and was G1 placed in Waikato Sprint.

The Ipswich Cup was the Bergerac’s first start beyond 1600m and gave the 6YO his ninth career win in 29 starts.

Improved by three runs since resuming and advancing to 2150m here, Bergerac scored a good win in this Listed event. He began well from barrier 10 and soon crossed to the lead before easing to settle in third place, on the rails. He got a split between a bunched group rounding the home turn and then finished far too well to score a solid win, looking suited to further still. It was also a very good ride by Michael Murphy. New Zealand stayer Sampson settled just beyond mid-field, made an early move when the pace slackened to join the leader at the 800m. He got to the front on turning for home and then kept fighting on well under his top weight (58kg) for second. Fighting Teo raced in a midfield position on the rails, was shuffled back from the 700m but saved ground along the inner at the home turn and then kept battling on to take the minor placing from Master Zephyr, who led the field until entering the straight, held on for fourth after running a bold race. The favourite High Opinion was back in last place until the home straight but made good late ground, without threatening, for (4.7 lengths) fifth.
