Sydney Specials: Randwick - 24th August 2019

3 minute read

The first Group 1 of the season kicks off at Randwick tomorrow with the Winx Stakes an absolute belter: Avilius Vs Verry Elleegant Vs Happy Clapper.

Finding it hard to split the trio, though lean towards Avilius over the people's champ - Happy Clapper.

Aiming to get the money early tomorrow with the Chris Waller trained True Detective the best bet of the day.

Narrowly beaten in both starts to begin this preparation, True Detective has put up form ahead of his rivals and simply should have won last start after making a mess of the start.

Two starts back he beat the Team Snowden trained Belitsa by 4.4L, Lucicello beat the same horse by 4.6L, though Saturday's race is a 2kg swing in True Detective's favour.

Not one to often spruik indirect form-lines, however it is of interest and given True Detective looks to have more upside, you can see how the market has already honed in on him.

The start is all important as if able to begin well he looks to land into a lovely spot just off the speed.

In a race lacking obvious pace on paper, he should comfortably get the jump on Lucicello and suspect he will be even better on a firm deck.

The step up to 1300m is another tick and with his share of luck, he should prove very hard to beat with James McDonald taking over.

The Team Hawkes trained Trope came a long way in his maiden preparation and remains a big watch fresh in the Group 3 Show County.

An impressive winner on debut, he went on to finish a narrow second in the Listed Fireball, before he simply got too far back in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint, then rounded out his preparation with a narrow second in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas.

Ending his maiden preparation rated 107+ by Timeform, he creates plenty of interest as it should give him the perfect platform for this preparation.

Of interest Chautauqua  was rated 107 after his second preparation (off winning the Hawkesbury Guineas), before running 115 first up and running 124+ second up.

Anywhere near that level tomorrow and he will be winning.

The obvious knock is that he will get back to near last from the draw, however if close enough on straightening he should prove very hard to hold out.
