Classic ambitions for Wolfgang

The Peter McKay-trained Wolfgang  was quick to show he had plenty of promise.

He showed natural ability right from the word go, running subsequent Group One winning two-year-old Sword of State to a nose on the first day of the juvenile trials last season.

The son of emerging Mapperley Stud sire Puccini was placed twice at stakes level during his two-year-old season, finishing second to Quattro Quinta in the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) and third behind Magneto in the Gr.3 Woburn Farm 2YO Classic (1200m)

With spring racing around the corner, the promising three-year-old has pleased with his development.

"His work has been even better this time in," McKay said. "He's more switched on. He is going as well as any other three-year-old that I have had at this stage of their preparation."

McKay has earmarked the Listed El Roca – Sir Colin Meads Trophy (1200m) as a springboard for his new season campaign, with the ultimate goal the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai 49th New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) in November.

"We will go down to Hawke's Bay on the first day of the carnival, the 1200 Listed race looks like an ideal starting point," he said.

"We will see where he takes us from there, but the main aim with him is the 2000 Guineas at Riccarton."
