Record Fourth Macau Gold Cup For Alan Tam

3 minute read

Bo Bo So Cute produced a dazzling last to first performance to give trainer Alan Tam his fourth win in the Macau Gold Cup at Taipa on Sunday.

Ridden by Ryan Curatolo, Bo Bo So Cute literally sprouted wings over the last 200 metres as he powered past horse after horse to grab victory right on the line from Golden Double (Akash Aucharuz), with Kelowna Star (Elvis Trujillo) two lengths back in third.

In a race run at a cracking speed Bo Bo So Cute was spotting the leaders 20 lengths at the 800m and was still a clear last coming to the turn and 12 lengths off the speed.

Bought to the extreme outside by Curatolo to find clear running, the five year old son of Savabeel produced one of the biggest finishes seen in the history of the G1 Gold Cup.

The win capped off a great weekend for Ryan Curatolo after he kicked home a double on Saturday’s program on So Sweet and Mister Kaopu.

The young Frenchman was on cloud nine after his Cup win.

“That was amazing, that was such an amazing feeling the way he finished the last 200 metres,” he said.

“I had watched all his races from before and he has no speed but you need to let him get balanced up and let him travel comfortable.

“Even though I was back last I was on the bridle and then I had to go wide around the turn to avoid the traffic. We got tight together with Golden Double but my horse just put his head down and gave all.

“I’ve had a good weekend but that was a pretty special win.”

For trainer Alan Tam it was his fourth win in the Gold Cup, his first coming with Happy Pearl under South African rider Gavan Van Zyl back in 2006.

Star Of Nittan made it back to back Cups for Tam in 2007 under the guidance of Australian Brent Stanley, then Tam’s international star Elderly Paradise romped home under Irishman Wayne Smith in 2012 to give Tam his third Gold Cup.

Tam is now the most successful trainer in the history of the race over Peter Leyshan and K C Chong who both have three wins each in the coveted event.

Macau’s former wonder horse Wonder Mossman was aiming for his fourth straight victory in the Macau Gold Cup and in his customary fashion had the field stretched out over plenty of ground in the run.

However after turning for home with a seven lengths break the 8YO compounded to finish fourth beaten three and a half lengths.

The Macau Gold Cup was the third leg of the Macau Triple Crown with no winner of the bonus again this year.

The Sio Cheong-trained River Treasure took out the first leg the G1 Macau Guineas over 1500 metres on April 22 and Joe Lau’s Sacred Man bolted away with the second leg the G1 SJM Macau Derby over 1800m on May 20.

Sacred Man was attempting to win Sunday’s race but after enjoying a nice run off the leader faded late to finish eighth beaten just over five lengths.
