Beasley credits Duric for winning Reddot ride

3 minute read

Danny Beasley graciously deflected all credit to fellow jockey Vlad Duric after landing Friday’s $60,000 Class 4 race over 1400m with outsider Reddot Rising.

Being the regular partner of both Reddot Rising ($53) and stablemate and $11 favourite Whose Else’s, Duric stuck with the latter, but selflessly gave Beasley all the low-down on how to best ride Reddot Rising.

As fiercely competitive as they may be on the track, jockeys do stick up for each other, all in the spirit of sportsmanship and a fair go, and Duric’s precious advice - when he was not obligated to do so - certainly went a long way in giving Beasley that extra edge in driving the Nadeem four-year-old home by a neck.

Two and a half furlongs from the wire, Duric looked to have pulled the right rein when Whose Else’s slid up to the weakening runaway leader Hongchen (Chan Wei Sheng) and was all poised to sweep past while Reddot Rising was mired at the back behind a wall of horses.

But the complexion of the race suddenly changed when Whose Else’s could not quite go on with the job. Gold Crown (Barend Vorster) emerged as the one who could lower his colours for a few strides, but Reddot Rising, who had been able to come out across heels at the 200m, suddenly sprouted springs on the outside to settle the issue with a late lunge on the line.

Whose Else’s and Gold Crown could not be split for second place. The winner ran the 1400m on the Long Course in 1min 23.04secs.

“Credit to Vlad as he has a very good knowledge of this horse well and told me exactly how I should ride him,” said Beasley as he jumped off.

“He told me to ride him like a miler and tonight, the pace of the race suited him. At the 600m, they drew me off and I thought that would take the sprint out of him.

“But when I changed the whip to the left hand, he found another gear and at the 300m he got off the rails and got there right on time.”

Deputising for trainer Stephen Gray, assistant-trainer Peter Hutton could not be happier with the 1-2, even if the 2 was shared.

“I think the leader messed up the race for Vlad while Danny was suited by that kind of speed,” said the English horseman.

“But at the top of the straight, I stopped looking at Dan’s horse as I thought he was gone. But Dan rode a patient race on him and once he found daylight on the outside, they got there in time.

“I wouldn’t say he lost his way after his debut win. After his first couple of runs, we backed him off a little and he’s come back freshened up. It was just a matter of finding the right race for him.”

Raced by the Maple Stars Stable, Reddot Rising was taking his total earnings past the $75,000 mark with that second win from five starts.
