Siam Vipasiri gets off the mark in style

3 minute read

Glen Boss described Friday’s impressive winner Siam Vipasiri as an “intelligent” filly heading towards a brilliant future in Singapore.

Given a gun ride by the Australian hoop, sitting outside the leader and even-money favourite Hugo (Daniel Moor) right from the start of the $85,000 Restricted Maiden race over 1200m, the Bernardini three-year-old was hard to beat once she extended to the line upon straightening up.

Collaring Hugo and racing past rather easily after a brief tussle, Siam Vipasiri ($12) went straight as a die to score by just over three lengths from Stephen Gray’s ward with The Jeweller (Alysha Collett) third another 1 ¼ lengths away. The winning time was 1min 10.79secs for the 1200m on the Short Course.

Aware of her two previous runs under Moor when second in one Leg of the Singapore Golden Horseshoe series and unplaced in the Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe (1200m), Boss said he rode Siam Vipasiri like she was the best horse in the field.

“She’s a very intelligent filly. She showed good form at her last prep even when she was badly drawn,” said Boss.

“She had a nice break since, put on some weight and muscle. When she let down, she lengthened her strides, lowered herself and gives you a lovely feeling in what she does.

“On what she showed tonight, it will take her a long way. She has a very bright future here and that’s like a lot of Michael Clements’ horses, they keep going up.”

The Zimbabwean-born trainer was not on hand to watch the Pupetch Racing Stable-owned filly open her account in style, being in Australia for the sales and also to attend Saturday’s A$13 million The Everest, Australia’s richest race.

But with Michael White (pictured above) filling in as he does whenever the boss is away, he would probably be already feeling on top of the world with his trusty assistant-trainer no doubt giving him a quick buzz once the filly was over the line.

That latest success takes them to 48 winners, tied with Shane Baertschiger and one winner behind current leader Lee Freedman.

“We always felt she would become a topliner one day. She has a bright future,” said White.

“She’s a leggy filly and is probably six months away from being her best. The boss will be happy, and it helps keep my job as well.”

With that first win, Siam Vipasiri has brought her earnings to around $60,000, recouping a small chunk of the A$140,000 price tag Clements paid for her at the Magic Millions 2017 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
