Boss to ride for Te Akau in NZ Derby

3 minute read

Glen Boss’s first day back in the saddle after suspension won’t be at the Kranji meeting on March 3, but overseas in New Zealand, and in a prestigious Group 1 race for good measure.

The multiple Group 1-winning jockey has been booked by the Te Akau Racing Stable to ride one of their two horses entered in the NZ$1 million Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 2 – In A Twinkling or Prise De Fer.

The Australian jockey is currently serving a two-day ban for careless riding aboard Countofmontecristo in the Group 3 Fortune Bowl on February 6. He misses this Friday’s meeting and the next Friday meeting on March 1.

“Mark Walker is the one who told me if I’d ride a horse in the NZ Derby for Te Akau,” said Boss, who does not ride for the leviathan Kiwi owner all that often but does boast one win aboard Miss Waimataitai in January 2017.

“As my suspension ends the day before, I said yes right away. It’s an honour to get a ride in such a big race for the Te Akau Stable.

“I’ve ridden in the New Zealand Derby before, but I haven’t won one yet. Maybe it’s for this time.

“At this stage, Te Akau has not decided which horse I will ride, but they’re both good chances. Opie Bosson will be riding the other horse.”

A three-year-old by Fastnet Rock, In A Twinkling was very impressive when runner-up to Surely Sacred in last Saturday’s Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m). He was then ridden by Rosie Myers and jumped from the outside gate.

Prise De Fer, who is by Savabeel, ran fifth in the same race and had Bosson in the irons then. Both are one-time winners and are prepared by Te Akau’s trainer Jamie Richards.

Rider engagements will be confirmed in due course.

“I will fly back to Singapore on the same night and will be back riding the next day at the Sunday meeting at Kranji,” said Boss.
