Elastic bands help Miss Dusty sling shot back to victory

Trainer Cliff Brown thanked equine chiropractor Jakki Harrison after Miss Dusty came off a handy spot to record a rousing win on Sunday.

The four-year-old mare by Reliable Man was one of Brown’s horses the English lady has been working on – and the results paid off immediately in the $70,000 Class 3 Division 1 race over 1100m.

Held in a lovely spot behind noted speedster It’s Got It All (Simon Kok Wei Hoong), Miss Dusty  was always travelling like a winner.

Kiss Your Song (John Powell) drew first blood as he challenged It’s Got It All upon straightening, but the moment Miss Dusty was peeled out for her run by jockey Michael Rodd, she attacked the line three wide – and the race was soon all hers for the taking.

The grey mare bounded away to the winning post to score by 1 ¼ lengths from Kiss Your Song with Kolombia (Wong Chin Chuen) plugging away in third place, separated by an identical margin, and just nosing It’s Got It All out of a second podium finish following his debut third. The winning time was 1min 4.9secs for the 1100m on the Polytrack.

“I’d like to thank Jakki Harrison. She has used large elastic bands on Miss Dusty to strengthen up her back and rear end,” said Brown.

“It’s worked wonders on her. I wasn’t all that confident before the race – I never am – but she was in a great spot, and it’s great she’s won again.”

While Brown put the win down to the extra hand in solving Miss Dusty’s hind muscles, Rodd said the humble trainer probably deserved more credit than he claims.

“She’s a filly and she’s hot. It’s not usually a good combination for Singapore,” said Brown’s No 1 jockey.

“But Cliff has done a job with her. It’s not easy to know when a filly or mare is ready, but Cliff knows when she’s ready.

“Today, we had a bit of luck. I was surprised we ended up in this good spot, and she was easy to ride today.

“Normally, she gets in the gates and she shakes, but today, she was so relaxed. She’s got a very good turn of foot.”

Racing in Brown’s Tanrpirr Stable colours, Miss Dusty has now taken her local record to four wins and three seconds from 10 starts for prizemoney that has tipped over the $200,000 mark.
