Singapore Racing - Weekend Review : 16th and 18th of August 2019

3 minute read

Not often you see a last start Class 4 winner competitive in a Group 3 event, let alone win it, but such was the case at Kranji on Sunday evening.

I'm Incredible winning the COMMITTEE'S PRIZE

The aptly named I'm Incredible did just that when taking out the Group 3 Committee's Prize under Harry Kasim.

Trained by Shane Baertschiger, I'm Incredible was just a Kranji Stakes D winner two starts back, before bolting in fresh over 1400m.

Saluting easily by over three lengths, I'm Incredible returned a new career peak, before making another big jump on Sunday.

Rated 75 by Timeform leading up to the event, he was certainly up against it, however Baertschiger was clearly confident he could measure up and that he did.

Beginning well from the middle draw, I'm Incredible pressed on to settle second with the Hideyuki Takaoka trained Makanani taking up the running.

Allowed to free-roll in front, Makanani set a good tempo out in front with I'm Incredible travelling well along the rail.

Conceding at least 7L to Makanani approaching the 600m, Kasim didn't panic and rode his own race, clicking up I'm Incredible inside the 400m.

While sticking on strongly in front, Makanani was paddling the last 200m with I'm Incredible looming large, taking over inside the 100m.

Strong through the line, I'm Incredible drew clear to score by 1.5L with Makanani finishing second from the Leticia Dragon trained Star Emperor.

Returning a Timeform rating of 95, I'm Incredible has improved 29 pounds this time in, all in just two starts.

An incredible rise, excuse the pun, though Baertschiger was always confident.

"When I told the owners, I would run the horse in the Committee's Prize, they thought I was crazy," Baertschiger said.

"There aren't a lot of horses on 69 points who run in a Group race, let alone win. But when you look at the field, the other horses may be higher rated than him, but they were beatable.

"Elite Excalibur would have been harder to beat if he had run, but he was scratched. The race then became more open.

"Harry also rode him a treat, he didn't panic and waited when the mare opened up. I was laughing as my horse had a lightweight, and I knew he has a good turn of foot.

"At the 300m, I was already telling (owner) Desmond (Ong) he would win."

The market also agreed sending out the son of Lope De Vega at $5.20.

The Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup is his main target and given what he has achieved already, it appears within his grasp.

"I think that horse can improve further. It's only his second-up run, the Gold Cup is his goal and I will probably look at the (Group 3) El Dorado Classic (2000m on September 20), which is a handicap race, as his next target," Baertschiger said.
