Brown has plenty of time for Flying Tourbillon

3 minute read

Cliff Brown hopes debut winner Flying Tourbillon can keep up his winning momentum at his second run in the $50,000 Class 4 Division 2 race over 1200m on Sunday.

Prior to his Kranji introduction, the Fighting Sun four-year-old had not really set his barrier trials alight, but he sure did so at his maiden appearance in an Open Maiden race over 1200m on October 18.

From the touch of contempt in the way he picked his way through the field and won going away, a few superlatives have already done the rounds, but Brown was not getting too carried away.

That is after all the phlegmatic trainer who has yet to endorse the 'next big thing' tag on Kranji's rising star Inferno.

"He's a nice horse. He did a good job at his first run here," said the Australian handler.

"He has trained on and has followed a similar training pattern as last time. He seems in good shape.

"We'll have a better idea how he goes this Sunday as he'll be up in class."

With stable jockey and last-start winning partner Michael Rodd unable to make the 54.5kgs allotted, Brown has called upon lightweight jockey Ben Thompson for the steering job this time.

"Michael can't ride at that weight. Ben will ride," said Brown.

"Ben rode him in a barrier trial last week (October 5) and I was very happy with that run (neck second to Silent Boss).

"He's drawn 12, but that's okay. We'll see how the track plays on that day and see how he goes.

"It's a bigger test and that run will tell us where he is at."

Not only Flying Tourbillon 's win captured the imagination of many at Kranji that day, but it also marked the start of a new association between Brown and Jubilant Racing Stable, the local outfit run by Joshua Tan.

Flying Tourbillon is the first horse Tan has ever sent to Brown. The Singaporean owner has previously linked up with the likes of Patrick Shaw, Ricardo Le Grange and Michael Clements, with whom he still races Song To The Moon. Clements prepared arguably his two best horses, Tannhauser and Chopin's Fantaisie.

Brown also saddles consistent mare Ararat Lady in the $70,000 Class 3 event over 1100m on Polytrack two events later.

With a record that reads three wins, two seconds and two thirds in 10 starts and more than $140,000 in stakes earnings for her owner, the Jass Stable, the Battle Paint mare has been a major source of satisfaction for Brown.

"Ararat Lady has been a fantastic mare. Like I've said before, mares are underrated here and I have a long list of them who did well, like What's New, Filibuster, Miss Dusty," said Brown.

"Unfortunately, Ararat Lady's drawn poorly again, that will make it hard for her. She's fine, but barrier 11 is really bad as she does better when she is close to the pace."

Thompson has again been booked for that ride with Rodd electing for River Radiance, who with Autumn Assault and Super Six will be some of the quality horses Ararat Lady is taking on in Sunday's race.
