Adaay books Commonwealth ticket

3 minute read

Adaay will head to Royal Ascot for the inaugural Group One Commonwealth Cup - a race exclusively for three-year-olds - after landing the Listed Toronado Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury.

Ryan Moore was in imperious form as he powered home in the six-furlong sprint to complete a treble - on his way to a five-timer.

Adaay, who had run well on his seasonal debut behind Limato in a Group Three at Ascot after a nine-month break, improved on that as he bounced off the drying ground, the 4-1 favourite beating Jungle Cat by a length and three-quarters.

Trainer William Haggas said: "He is doing very well. He went off a bit last year so we didn't run him after Newbury in July. He came back well at Ascot, ran a good race, got a bit tired and has come on for that.

"He was a breeze-up horse. It was Angus Gold (racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan), who said 'don't just think of him as a two-year-old.' He said let's give him a chance, because he obviously has some talent.

"We put him away for a bit with the intention of bringing him back, but it rained and I don't think he likes the soft ground. We were hoping he would go on, but you never know.

"The Commonwealth Cup has been a long time coming. He is a useful horse and you never know what might happen. He may go for the Sandy Lane (at Haydock) on the 30th, but we will have to see.

"There had been no Group (sprint) races in Europe exclusively for three-year-olds and we saw a lot of two-year-olds going directly to stud as a result. The Commonwealth Cup looks like being a really good race and it might just be the race of the Royal Ascot meeting."
