Varian convinced about Steve Rogers

3 minute read

Steve Rogers will bid to land a remarkable sixth handicap success of the year when he contests in the Betfred Cesarewitch, a £250,000 heritage handicap, at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse on Saturday.

This two and a quarter mile stamina test which was first run in 1839 has attracted a full field of 34 runners including Low Key, winner of last month’s Betfred Cesarewitch Trial over the full course and distance. His trainer, David Pipe, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father, Martin, who won this race in 2000 and 2002.

A four-year-old Montjeu gelding trained by Roger Varian, Steve Rogers has officially improved by almost two stone since he won a handicap at Wolverhampton on January 16th. But he will need to overcome being drawn on the wide outside in stall 33.

“Steve Rogers has been thriving all year and has done really well since his last win at Chester. He is still going the right way and I think that there is more in his locker – he is just one of those late-maturing horses who keeps getting better,” said Varian

“Like many of his opponents, the big question is if he will stay the trip but he has always shaped like a horse who would stay this far. He has not got an ideal draw on the outside but there is nothing that we can do about that.”

“His owner, Mr Bizakov, has always been one of my biggest supporters. He has been very patient with this horse and now he is beginning to reap the rewards.”
