Ballydoyle colt gets home in Gallinule

3 minute read

Homesman was a narrow winner of the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh.

Turning out a fortnight after chasing home Irishcorrespondent in a conditions race at the track, Aidan O'Brien's charge was a 5-1 shot for this Group Three in first-time blinkers.

Ryan Moore's mount took a while to find top gear, but eventually wore down Born To Play to score by a head.

O'Brien said: "Ryan gave him a great ride. He's a big, massive horse for a three-year-old and he was a little bit immature mentally, but he's coming. That's why we put the blinkers on him, just to try to get him together.

"He'd probably prefer better ground and a mile and a quarter is probably his trip, but we could look at the Irish Derby.

"We could also look at the King Edward at Royal Ascot for him."

O'Brien and Moore also won the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas with the brilliant Winter, and completed a treble when Iron Mountain landed the O'Brien's Wines Irish EBF Maiden.

The 2-1 chance had just the one previous outing, in October last year, but appears a decent prospect and accounted for favourite Europium by three and three-quarter lengths.

O'Brien said: "He stays going well and kept pulling out so he might get further than a mile and a quarter.

"Ryan was very strong on him. He got a hold of him and he found plenty under pressure.

"He could go to Ascot for a race over a mile and a half or a mile and six (furlongs). Maybe he won't need that far, though, as he's a War Front."
