Race Preview - 2018 French Derby

3 minute read

The Prix Du Jockey Club - France's take on the Derby - takes place at Chantilly Sunday and the Racing and Sports Priceline fancies the favourite.

That favourite is Olmedo, the winner of the French Guineas three weeks back, and early markets look to have him generously quoted based on the Racing and Sports price.

Assessed Prices: Olmedo $3.10; Dice Roll $6.50; Study Of Man $6.50; Stable Genius $13.00; Naturally High $13.00.

Olmedo is a firm favourite based on that assessment and having started at $2.70 when winning the Guineas this seems fair enough.

He shapes as though the step up in trip will pose no concerns and while the French Guineas was a messy affair the time was solid enough and Olmedo impressed with how he put the race away. He looks better than the bare result there.

He has the same platform - though not quite the same ratings - as his stablemate Brametot did when he won this race last year.

Dice Roll is the other key runner through that Guineas. He's impressed to this point and has to have similar chances this time around.

Stage Magic is something of an unknown. He did the job in the Greffulhe but it was a small field and the tempo was gentle.

That can add merit to the margins he put on his rivals but it still leaves him hard to measure. Have to be very wary.

Stable Genius and Naturally High ran in the same listed race in the lead up. That looks form well short of this but the time there was solid. Naturally High won and Stable Genius was sent out favourite. Both have similar claims here.

Suggested bet: Back Olmedo to win the French Derby.
