York date in mind for Signora Cabello

Westow Stakes target for Quinn’s Queen Mary winner

Signora Cabello  is set for a return to York this month after her promising comeback behind the mighty Calyx at Ascot.

John Quinn’s Queen Mary heroine first announced herself with a surprise Listed victory at York’s Dante meeting last year, having previously opened her account in a novice at Bath.

The dual Group Two winner may try to repeat the dose on the Knavesmire, in the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Westow Stakes over five furlongs.

Quinn was broadly encouraged by Signora Cabello’s dead heat for a four-and-three-quarter-length fourth behind unbeaten speed machine Calyx on her first run in more than seven months in last week’s Commonwealth Cup Trial.

“She was running on at the end,” said the North Yorkshire trainer, who admits his filly was caught out as Calyx suddenly stretched clear of the field.

“Hindsight is a great thing – funnily enough we all thought there’d be pace in the race, but there wasn’t really.

“They went from ‘zero to hero’ then, and she just got caught out a bit and dropped right out – and I thought ‘aw shucks’, but to be fair to her she knuckled down well.”

Different tactics might have seen the Phoenix Thoroughbred-owned filly finish closer to the brilliant winner – but Quinn is already planning her next target, en route to a possible return to Royal Ascot next month.

He added: “If I could have the day back again I think we’d have made more use of her.

“But all in all I, was pleased – take the winner out, and she’s run a fine race.

“She was beaten less than five lengths, finished fourth – and the winner won by four.

“I think she could go for the Westow Stakes, the Listed race at York.

“Last year, the more she ran the better she got, so I don’t want to wrap her up. If the lads agree she’ll go there.”
