ASCOT 2019 DAY 1

3 minute read

The showers came and the going was changed to soft and there was the usual mix of surprises and no surprises.

All that glitters is not gold as the silver-coated Lord Glitters took out the Queen Anne on 14/1 for David O'Meara and Dan Tudhope (first of a double for the jockey).  They finished a neck ahead of Beat The Bank, representing the late Khun Vichai Srivaddhanaprabbha's King Racing, on 20/1 and ¾ length to One Master, also a 20/1 shot.  Romanised came from the back to take fourth on 25/1.

The Coventry was much more according to script as the first three finished in market order – Arizona, the first of a double for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, the winner with Threat ½ length away in second and Guildsman a neck off in third.

The King's Stand was the expected thriller with Blue Point getting the win over Battash.  Soldier's Call took the third and the honest Mabs Cross fourth.  No luck for Aussie hope Houtzen who knuckled over on coming out of the gates but miraculously Kerrin McEvoy managed to stay on and their eighth place was commendable.

The St James's Palace Stakes G1 over 1600m for the 3yo colts saw Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore collect the double with Circus Maximus 10/1 getting the verdict over King Of Comedy who finished ahead of his stablemate Too Darn Hot whose third was good but not great but the Brits like him and he had started favourite.

The Royal Procession went off well before the rain started and it seems the train strike was not too much of a problem for people going to the course although going home may have been another story.
