Another big handicap on the agenda
Charlie Fellowes is eyeing another valuable pot with Carnwennan after identifying the £100,000 Marsh Cup at Newbury later this month as his next port of call.
The Newmarket handler feels the extended two-mile handicap on July 20 is the ideal target for the son of Cacique, who is on a four-timer.
Since being touched off on his return at Doncaster, the four-year-old gelding has rattled up wins at York and Chelmsford before completing his hat-trick with victory in the Northumberland Vase at Newcastle on Saturday.
Fellowes said: "Carnwennan has gone up to a mark of 94 now and I know exactly what I'm going to do with him and that is go to Newbury in just under three weeks' time for the £100,000 two mile handicap there. The timing is perfect and he will love the track there.
"He really impressed me the other day. He is so laid-back he never does anything flashy, but the way he won at Newcastle with such authority he looks more like a man now really.
"He is clearly a stayer going places. Stevie (Donohoe) had to take a pull and when they do that you know they mean business. I don't think he came out of second gear."
An outing in the Dubai Cesarewitch at Newmarket had been mentioned as a possible end of season aim for Carnwennan following his latest success – but with reservations about the track Fellowes has not ruled out looking elsewhere should his upward curve continue.
He added: "He has got the Cesarewitch as an option, but I'm not 100 per cent sure about the track and that would be my only reservation, otherwise I would like to have a go.
"There are lots of options for him and I wouldn't mind stepping him up into a stakes-class race at some stage."
A drop back to a mile is on the cards for Hampton Court Stakes third King Ottokar, with Fellowes weighing up two Group Three options for the Motivator colt.
He said: "There is the Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood, but I would not run him there if the ground was quick as I don't think Goodwood over a mile on quick ground is his track.
"The other option, and the more likely one, is the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury. It is a track I have a good record at and it is a stiff mile on a fair track.
"Although he would be taking on older horses at Salisbury, I would be less worried about the ground there because of the nature of the track."
