Listed prize for Jardine filly
Paul Mulrennan has plenty of fond memories on and off the track at Newbury and Orlaith gave him another when landing the feature Byerley Stud Stakes on Friday.
The Group One-winning rider was rewarded for the long journey down from his Yorkshire base after galvanising the Iain Jardine-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock to victory in the Listed prize.
Appearing to appreciate the soft conditions, the 14-1 shot picked up smartly during the closing stages of the five-furlong dash before holding Lingfield scorer Al Raya by three-quarters of a length.
Mulrennan said: "I always have plenty of luck here.
"I passed my driving test here when I worked for Brian Meehan many years ago and I won on Mecca's Angel, so I've always had a bit of luck down here – it's nice to come down and get a bit of money.
"Thirsk is on tonight and I could have had five rides there as I only live two minutes from Thirsk. She has improved a hell of a lot and she was worth a shot at this."
Following the victory Mulrennan was quick to heap plenty of praise on the Carrutherstown handler.
He added: "All credit to Iain Jardine as she has improved with each run. We threw her in the deep end in a conditions race and she ran well.
"She has come on again for that last run. She seemed to relish that soft ground. She has got bigger and stronger and I was never in doubt.
"I thought it was a good performance considering she was drawn one. I only had to give her a couple of smacks. Hopefully there is more to come."
Quadrilateral earned a quote of 33-1 with Paddy Power for next year's Qipco 1000 Guineas after getting up to make a winning debut in the Unibet EBF Maiden Stakes.
Harry Charlton, assistant to his father, Roger, said of the 7-2 winner: "She has always been competitive at home. When you put her with something she wants to get in front of it.
"I told Jason (Watson) to take his time, but I didn't think she would pick up from there. Her natural ability got her there in the end.
"She is in the Rockfel, we put her in that two days ago. She would not want to run again in between, but whether that's the race for her or something smaller she will let us know over the next week or two."
A trip to Germany and a step up to Group-race company is likely to be on the agenda for Game And Set (4-1) after making it third time lucky with two-length victory in the Tom Mitchell 65th Birthday British EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes.
Trainer Andrew Balding said: "She is a filly we have liked and we might look at a Group Three race Baden-Baden in two weeks' time. I think she deserves to have a crack at some black type.
"She ran over seven last time and unless the ground was slow she probably wants a return to seven.
"She had the option of the seven-furlong race on the card, but we decided to run her at six against the fillies and we have been proved right."
