Japan Cup and Hong Kong Vase being considered for Arc second In Swoop

3 minute read

Arc runner-up In Swoop is to be nominated for the Japan Cup as trainer Francis Graffard considers lucrative Far East options for the German Derby winner after his gallant run behind Sottsass.

In the immediate aftermath of Sunday's near-miss, Graffard said he would be calling it a day for the year with In Swoop, who finished a staying-on neck behind Sottsass in Europe's richest race.

But In Swoop has bounced out of the ParisLongchamp race in such good form that his Lamorlaye trainer is now weighing up international options.

"In Swoop has come out of the Arc so well that I am looking at other options," said Graffard. "He is going to be entered in the Japan Cup next week and we are going to study that. He can also be entered in the Hong Kong Vase."

In Swoop established himself as one of the best three-year-old middle- distance horses in Europe with his Arc second place on only the fifth start of his career.

"I have a nice horse, an improving type," said Graffard. "He ran really well. I don't know if he is the best but he is one of the nicest three-year-olds of the season and I am pleased to have him in my yard."

But for the colt's narrow defeat, Graffard would have celebrated the perfect Arc weekend with The Revenant winning the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and Wooded claiming the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye.

"It would have been amazing, especially to win at a mile, a mile and a half and five furlongs, but it's hard to complain when you are second in the Arc," he reflected.

The Revenant recorded his victory on his first start since finishing second in last year's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and will next bid to go one better in the same race next weekend.

"That's the plan," said Graffard. "He came out of his race really well and hopefully that will have put him spot on. Wooded won't run again this year."
